What year tranny is it? Unless the mainshaft is broke, why replacing it? Why are you rebuilding teh tranny in teh 1st place?

its a 95. i was told itd be a good idea to replace the 170k mile main shaft even if its with a oem one. and the rebuilt is for the 650+hp ill be putting through it. my hp estimate for the car on a 200 shot is around 700.

Well, working with a $500 budget and trying to get a tranny to live behind 700 HP is a tall order, I can tell you that, ESPECIALLY if you plan on spending money on a mainshaft. Personally, I would save up some more, and do:

Billet Keys 3-4
Steel 3-4 fork
Bronze pads 1-4
New synchro *** 1-4
Carb Fiber blocking rings

do i NEED the 2nd gear were they really weak in the early t56's? and do i need new bearings? i know that 500 is a tight budget for what im goin to throw at it. im tryin to make it hold for the time. if i dont need second gear and dont need new bearings then i can get almost everything on that list.

Wel, is there anything WRONG with teh tranny now? Or are just kind of going through it to make it a little bit stronger? In other words, is there anything broke with teh tranny right now that you know of?

OK, now we are getting somewhere. Well, with $500, cross out bearings (unless when you get tranny apart they are toast, but most times bearings hold up well, unless something breaks, contaminates fluid, and run through the bearing) but sounds like bearings are probaly OK.
I would also cross off mainshaft and 2nd gear. Why? If ain't broke, don't mess with it. You are gonna have trouble with the other parts 1st like synchro's/blocking rings/shift fork/keys, etc... I would replace all of those parts 1st.

Have you even taken the tranny apart yet? I wouldn't order anything until you've got everything torn down and inspected. No sense wasting money replacing parts that aren't worn/broken.

Yeah you really do not need billet keys for 1-2, and teh 3-4 steel fork is a little expensive (you can get from Tick one of our sponsors for @ $50 I believe)

Need front and rear seal just to be safe, and some silicone

upgrade? I've read about T56 stage builds, but you aren't going to be able to do it with that budget. If you just go about replacing a few weak spots then you will only find the other weak spots of the parts you didn't upgrade. So you need to either replace all of it or none of it. Save up and open the trans once and be done with it.

if thats the case how come i have talked to multiple ppl that have only done a few "upgrades" and havent found the weak spots yet. if i sent the trans out to a shop they would do everything on that list. unless i had the big $$$$ to do a viper build which i dont and wont. so wats the difference if i do these upgrades or have a trans shop rebuild it with these upgrades? if i do these and i find another weak link itll most likly be the main shaft and then when i post up that i busted the trans you may laugh.

edit: if i put the trans back in completly stock im sure itd buy me the 500 mile of break in befor i messed it up.

I wouldn't feel comfortable reinforcing a few pieces of the trans with an engine laying down over 700hp into it. Then again, I think the T56 is rated up to 6XX hp and 6XX tq.

Iunno. Like I said, I'd play it safe and save a bit more and do it all out rather then just winging it and hoping everything goes well. I guess it depends on how long it would take you to save the money vs downtime in the future if you do break something.
