Default Camaro LS1 Corvette LS1

Why is the LS1 Camaro under-rated at 305(98-00)compared to 345hp in the vette. From my understanding there was no internal difference between the engines. The only differences I am aware of is the Corvette never had EGR which in 2001/2002 the LS1 Camaro was without also. Also the 01 Camaro received the LS6 intake so can someone explain these HP differences?I assume it is for insurance and corvette sales purposes.

Yeah I know they are practically the same engine.I am aware the Vette used the fly-by wire throttle body though.

the largest actual difference is the exhaust routing of the vette.

"Corvette vs F-body LS1:
-exact same heads
-exact same block
-exact same crank/rods/pistons
-exact same intake manifold
-slightly different cam specs (negligible)
-different shaped oil pan
-different serpentine belt pulley layout

Corvette LS1 vs LS6:
-different head castings (LS6 flow slightly better stock)
-different intake manifolds prior to 2001 Corvettes. All 2001 and newer Corvettes and F-body LS1s have the LS6 intake.
-different cam specs (02-03 LS6 cam is much better than 01 or regular C5)
-different PCV system
-slightly different block internals (crankcase port windows larger on LS6)
-same crank and rods, I believe pistons are a bit different

Basically the pulley layout and the oil pan shape. Corvettes have a flat oil pan with "wings" on the side, which don't really fit in any other vehicles very well.

There are quite a few bolt-on LS1s running mid-high 11s with no internal engine modifications, all in the 3100-3200 lb range."

Hope it helps all this info was found in " f-body ls1 vs. corvette ls1 vs. ls6" July 17th 2003.

This is a good post. Which leads me to ask...again...

what's the difference between the 98 Camaro LS1 engine and the 98 Corvette LS1 engine. It's funny how GM (and car enthusiasts alike) had made all this hoopla about the 98 Camaro Z28 and SS having for the first time the same V8 engine as the Corvette. Now, yes, the numbers might have been fugged to make the Corvette more appealing to big spenders...but really, is it really worth saying the the Camaro really doesn't have the Corvette engine, just because the pulleys are a little different? Or that the might have a different intake manifold (which cane be corrected with swapping out the Camaro's LS1 manifold for an LS6 manifold)? Really...

I didn't think there was a difference in the cam but would need to go back and check the cam specs. Having said that, the two primary differences were the intake and the exhaust. My understanding is they basically choked the f-body LS1 to reduce hp likely because they couldn't advertise the f-body with the same hp as their flagship car. I have the GM service manual, and every section is repeated for f-body and y-body but the motors are identical.

Could it have anything to do with factory tuning ?? Maybe the factory tune has LESS timing in it ?? The corvette exhaust flows better then the Y stuff on the Fbody. Not sure if those two things add up to 40 fwhp though. Just putting it out there.

Yeah...that's funny. For people to claim the engines are different because of the exhaust setup, which comes waaay after the engine. Cam specs, maybe. But what if those specs (and tuning) are, brought back to Corvette specs. Then it's for all intents and purposes, the same engine as the one in the Corvettes.

You missed the point. Totally missed. The point is that the more restrictive Fbody exhaust influences the motor's output. I also am just guessing that a few degrees of timing were pulled to reduce the fbody output.

On another note, I test drove a 2000 ws6 prior to buying my vette and I liked how strong it felt, but hated the "flex" under heavy acceleration. The car felt cheap in that respect, but I love the way it looks.

It's the Euro Taillights that made the difference.

Well Yeah the Vette is 3100 lbs and an f body is 3450 roughly. My stock 99 layed down 336 hp. If it was 3000 lbs I would beat a stock Vette.

Correct me if I am wrong as I have a Vette, but I thought one of the first mods to the f-body was a lid due to the restrictive nature of the stock setup. Anyone know how much hp a lid gets when you do this? It was my understanding that basically the f-body motor was breathing through a straw.

Both cars dyno'd....stock for stock..........within 5 rwhp, 10 max. This was not due to timing and the rest of that nonsense. It was purely intake (not intake manifold) and exhaust that made the difference in the hp. Fast forward...most 2001-2002 LS1 f-bodies made around 315-325 rwhp....which is right on par with the claimed 345 of the stock vette. The 325 number that GM put on the f-bods was total BS.

Add into the equation the solid rear axle of the f-body.....and you have almost a dead heat in a drag race. The driver is the deciding factor.....cuz these cars (despite what corvette owners say) are virtually the same in straigt line performance to 100 mph.
