More gear and more tire better?
Any reason why you are not better off (assuming you have room) to have more gear (like a 4.10) and a larger tire (like a 29.5) vs. a 28" and something like a 3.73? Is it just the space issue? This would be on a mid 9 second car, A3, etc.

take for example a 26" tire and a 3.73 gear. It has XXX amount of contact patch on the ground. Then step up to a 28" tire and say a 3.89 gear. It has an even bigger contact patch on the ground, yet the Rpm's are going to be very close to the same.
There comes a point when too much tire for a given car will slow it down though. Figure out what rpm you need to be at going through the traps, then play with gear and tire combinations to fit your application.

I've gone 9.6 to 9.5 with both 3.73 and 4.10 with a 28. Honestly I put the 3.73 to try to calm it down for the first 60 feet. Which, didn't work Car still went on the bumper. Only thing it did was drop the rpm about 200 to 300 rpm thru the traps. Seeing 142 to 143 mph last time I ran the car.

evenly matched the taller tire and gear are going to perform better, and be more consistant.
larger sidewal, its a no brainer.
with a numerically higher gear, your reaction times will be quicker even though the final ratio would be the same. wont make the et any quicker, but it does help off the line.
