Default 10 bolt broke is the tranny too?

Hi all, my first post. I need a little help as I'm still realtively new to this scene (yeah you can say noob, lol).
I broke my car at the track last week. I had a look at the diff, one of the cogs has lost some teeth which explains the banging from the rear. I know that needs fixing but this is where I need some advice:

The car (A4) will drive in reverse and if I shift it to 1st with some rearend bangs every few seconds. When I put it in drive, though, I'd just hear a whirring sound and it wouldn't move. Can this be explained by my broken teeth in the diff or do you think I might have mashed the transmission too.

I don't want to replace/fix the diff (no way I can afford a 12bolt or 9inch) and then find the car is still f@#?*% so I'd appreciate some advice from you experienced fbody guys.

Thanks for reading.

Tell me about it! I've found a guy breakin a v6 not too far away. Just waitin on a callback from him, if he's still got the diff I'm gonna buy it and install. Someone jump in quick if they think it won't fit!!!
If the car still won't go I'll have his trans aswell.

It's possible with that information for the trans to be good, and it's possible for it to be bad.

The rear end should be the same from a V6 but I don't know/think the trans is the same.

Question New internals to rebuild diff.

Thanks for the replies guys. I've just come back out from under the car. I think the trans is okay. The wheels spin in drive when I take the load off/jack it up. So I'm just thinkin I need to sort the rear.

I've taken a photo of the diff, I'm pretty sure it's a Torsen (as I think it's got a paddle), after reading the FAQs in the sticky:

'A paddle takes the place of an axle pin in a Torsen differential car. Instead of a thin cylinder, it is shaped like a block and is held in with an 8mm bolt.'(thanks Keliente)

I've tried to attach the image, hopefully it's worked...

Can someone just confirm the type of diff please, then I will find somewhere to buy just the internals from and get it rebuilt. That's gotta be the cheapest option, I think...

agreed, you need to spin it around to get to the bolt that will let the paddle slide out.

Rear with bolt into place, the tranny doesn't. It bolts to the engine different.

Thanks MattredSS and 01ssreda4.
LutonMatt, yup, got the info I needed and damn fast too. Now I just need to find a stockist for the internals of a torsen diff and it's back to the racetrack...I'll be able to get to work too but that's not as important!

Thanks, fingers crossed it's just the rear then.
