Cool VIDEO: Cash for Clunkers engine being killed

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X0IcIxhd8ks

The government has set forth clear rules governing what happens to a vehicle that's been traded in under the Cash for Clunkers program. Before being shipped to a processor and shredded into metallic lettuce, the dealer that accepts the trade-in must permanently disable the engine... kill it... dead. We've already described for you what the process entails: Draining the vehicle's oil and replacing it with sodium silicate solution, turning the car on and revving it at 2,000 rpm until the engine seizes. It sounds as efficient as an executioner's blade, but as this video after the jump of the process being implemented shows, the reality is anything but.

Have you ever watched a car in its final death throes? Be prepared, have a hanky handy. We won't think less of you if tears are shed, even if it is for a 1995 Oldsmobile Aurora with 240,000 miles. Thanks to Wayzata Nissan, you'll see exactly what's required for every single Cash for Clunkers trade-in after the jump.

Nice, Hopefully this is better then the other group that was destroying gas hogs because they 'cause too much polution'. They took the cars and burnt them... lol. The amount of polution caused by burning one car was more then if it was being driven for 10 years straight, 24 hours a day 7 days a week.

Brilliant!

I was at Dodge and they can offer me a Ram 1500 for $12400 if I turn in my 1988 GTA Firebird. $4500 from government, $3500 from dodge, and $2000 from the dealership. Thinking about it but would hate to see her go. She was my first car since high school. Ive done everything in that car... everything!

I thought you needed a gas saver. Dodge Ram 1500 is a gas saver? I think your Firebird and that Ram probably average about the same MPG. I guess you could trade it in though just to have a new vehicle, but seeing as you have sentimental value for the GTA, how could you trade it in knowing they will kill the engine and then scrap it? I say you save a little cash and buy a used Civic, Cavalier, Corolla, etc., keep the Firebird, and actually get the gas saver you said you needed.

The Ram 1500 is 20mpg, thats double what my Firebird gives me. I'd hate to see her go but I dont know if I'll walk on a good deal. Actually though, I'd like a 5.7 Hemi, 390hp 403lbs/trq. Could still get one for 20k. Just ideas though.

That's highway MPG. Whether it's the V6 or V8 1500, they all give 14 mpg city/20 mpg highway http://www.dodge.com/en/performance/2009/#mpg_ram_1500. In comparison, your Firebird should yield you 15 mpg city/24 mpg highway http://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/noframes/4306.shtml. But if your Firebird is really giving you 10 mpg, then what's wrong with it. You really beat on it that bad? It's not like that car is super modified? Anyway, if I go by the way you read MPG, your Firebird is still better than the 1500...24 MPG.
