lq4 w/ what heads
I am about to buy a lq4 block and want to know what heads i should run. I will be running all motor and maybe some juice. I have a set of 862 casting heads off of a 5.3 vortec motor will they work or should i find another set.

Is it an LS4 short-block or just the block (trying to get an idea whether it's the GM dish piston or an aftermarket flat-top, etc)? That'll help us recommend which head would suit you best.

Its a LQ4 complete motor. 6.0 Vortec motor. It has factory dished pistons. i dont want to buy some new heads right now since this build is on a slight budget and am willing to run the factory heads for a while. I do have a set of the 862 heads off of a 5.3l block and do not have the factory ls1 heads ( LONG STORY ). so would the 862 work and what heads should i look for in the feature.

862 heads will work, but it will choke the motor. The 4.8/5.3 heads have smaller valves, and even though you would be gaining some compression, you'd negate it by less airflow. The stock 317 heads flow as well as LS6 heads (as stated before), so you could mill those down and get some compression back. If you have a few hundred dollars to play with, get some L92s and mill them down to regain compression. Just be aware you'll have to switch out the intake manifold, fuel rails, and throttle body, and be prepared for the added cost.
