Default 5th & 6th gear issues

Driving my '02 SS today lost 6th gear & it is trying to kick out of fifth under throttle. If I back completely out of it it falls into neutral. It grinds a little as I stick it back into gear. If I try to go to sixth its like there is nothing there. You can barely feel the teeth making contact.

Very possible that you stripped the mainshaft and matching 5-6 cluster gear.

Best to get that fixed asap before it causes more damage.

It's an '02 with only 34k on it. I wouldn't call that high milage and it's only putting a little over 400 to the tires.

Thats not enough miles to strip the mainshaft or 5-6 cluster gear.

I'm going to say its a 5-6 shift fork related issue. Do you happen to leave your hand on the shifter while cruising down the highway?

Stop doing that. You probably wore out the fork for the 5-6 gears.

I drove my '97 SS the same way for 123k and never had a problem out of it. That car was drove hard and put up wet. In my opinion they screwed up when they changed the way the t56 was built.

Dropped tranny yesterday and it looks like a broken snap ring and some busted up detents. I'll find out more when it gets torn all the way down.

Thats not too common to break the snap ring like that.
