Default How can I ID 05 vs 06 diff?

I was curious if there was a cosmetic difference between the 05 and 06 diff and where the part number was located. My diff looks brand new, but really everything under my car does (gotta love FL cars!), so I don't know if it has been changed or not and would like to know which one is in there. Thanks.

Wow, I appreciate the attempt to help, but the sarcasm was completely unwarranted. Did you even read the post? I said diff, not car. I'm pretty sure I know what year my car is . The 05 diffs that got replaced under warranty got upgraded to the 06-up units. Being that I bought my car used, I do not know if mine has been replaced and/or upgraded, so I would like to know how to tell the *diffs* apart so I can ID which one is in my car.

I read that too, but having never seen ANY CTS diff before, I have no clue what it is more finned than lol.

I think that looks like the '05 diff. Check out this thread http://www.cadillacforums.com/forums...ferential.html

Don't be too concerned, there are a lot of guys with high miles on their '05 diffs and have no problems. I only had mine replaced because it was whining, not broken, and knew I could get it upgraded for free. Just don't wheel hop it and it should last you for a while.

Thanks. I'm not really "concerned", I know that the problem is not nearly as bad as what it is made out to be on the interwebz- it never is. I just am curious because I have a few different thoughts for what I am going to do for mods and wanted to get an idea how strong it is before proceeding. An 06 diff didn't look to be too expensive from GM parts direct or scrap yards, so I'll just go that route if I break it. Thanks again.

If you are willing to spend that kind of money for direct GM replacement parts I would highly suggest going the aftermarket route BEFORE destroying your diff. There are options like a complete MADMAN rear end or the more inexpensive route of Hendrix Engineering axles that completely eliminate wheel hop, hence no breaky.

You can call a dealer and give them the vin and they can tell you everything that the dealer has replaced.

I understood what you were talking about, however the title does make sense if you substitue the word "difference" for "diff"

How can I ID 05 vs 06 difference

except everyone knows that diff in the cts-v forum stand for differential because no one can say cts-v with saying diff(seems like anyways). not really a whole lot of difference in the diff in 05-06 so as far as power goes if you put a good number to the wheels they will both probably handle damn close to the same amount until you eliminate wheelp hop.

If I was looking at the right part, it wasn't too bad at all (under $1000) from GM- unless that was just the case?

I already ran a VIS and it was not replaced under warranty, but being that it is a 5 year old used car that is out of warranty, anything is possible .

The 06 diff will have 157 as the first three digits on the sticker on the diff. The 04 diff has a 103 I think.
