Default What do you think of this exhaust setup?

I'm going to get my exhaust done this week now that the wifey approved of my new '98 TransAm that I acuired through a trade. It was bone stock with the exception of 3.73's until I was able to work on it this weekend; got an SLP lid, P&P TB, free ram air mod, EGR mod, raised & modded lower lid base and MSD wires. Off to a great start with just under $50 that I spent on the lid, wires(got a good deal on them LOL!) and misc crap for the free mods.

Im trying to keep the costs down as much as possible so my wifey doesn't get on my case; this is what I'm planning for the exhaust.

3'' ORY, no cats, 2.5" or 3" Magnaflow bullet then out the back. Essentially a Magnamouth setup.

Is it worth going to a 3" in/out muffler even if both are straight through designs? I know the 2.5" muffler will sound quiter which is what I'm looking for but will it hurt performance any even though its not restrictive at all.

you can always just put a bullet at the end of a the y and dump it at the axles. that will be easier and cheaper

i would go with a smaller ORY to keep clearance reasonable. or at least notch the tubing where it passes under the frame. you won't lose enough area to affect power but could easily gain 1/2-3/4" of clearance.

DEFINATLY run a 3" in/out muffler. i can't imagine it would make a difference in sound going smaller...but it could easily rob a little power. going from 3" to 2.5" is a 30% reduction in cross-sectional area...HUGE!!

i ran an 18" bullet off my Ypipe, then a 3" i-pipe back over the axle into a 24" bullet and put a turn down on it under the trunk. sounded really good and made nice power.

was a little raspy...but with no cats and a decent cam it was expected.

I'm leaning towards dumping the exhaust till I can afford some Corsa clones. I will notch the y-pipe to clear the floorboard since I've always had problems with it in the past on my other F-bodies. I'll buy the 3" unit since it will leave some room for future mods and hopefully doesn't sound too loud. Anyone know where to get the magnaflow bullet for cheap?

Anyone had experience with the shipping services from Ebay vendors? The price there would be slightly cheaper and they offer free shipping; Summit has great shipping but is more expensive.

how big around is that muffler? i was thinking it was 5"

may have ended up with better clearance and a little better sound with a 4x9.

interested to see how it goes.

I got the #14419 which I think is 4" case which should still have a nice tone to it but with decent clearance. My '93 TransAm had a similar setup with an XR-1 but the clearance wasn't that good cuz I tucked it up real close to the floorboard because of the 5" case. I'm gonna get pics and a vid soon, can't wait!
