4l80e or turbo 400????????
I have a t-76/ls1 setup in a 92 mustang coupe and im trying to decide on a transmission. It has a computer and harness from a 200 6-speed camaro SS. I would like the overdrive but my question is do i need a computer for aod to operate a 4l80e with a reverse manual valve body and transbrake or will it all be mechanical. Or should i just go with the turbo 400. The car is turbo so it will have some 3:27 gears in it so it may not be that bad with the 400. Any input appreciated.

I would go with the th400 but then no OD so the 4L80 is nice too, bet then you have the weight.
Rossler Transmissions is who I went to for my trans and they make both a 400 and the
4L80E, they are extremely helpfull if you call them and ask they will go over the pro's and con's of each set up and explain about the computer (which I don't know if you need or not), I think they make a full manual 80E.

BTW I like my overdrive with lockup, 3.00 gears and 2050 rpm at 70 mph (stock f body 25.5" tall tires).

I run a 4L80 with the TransGo forward MVB, Works grate with not computer assist, I like the overdrive ,because it lets me run a lower gear on the street. 4:30's. 55 mph is 2600 rpms. And i had Cercle-D build me a Multidisk 4400 stall, so i can lockup on top end with the button.

thanks for the responses guys. Will any 4l80e work or only certain years? I found one on craigslist that supposedly works perfect out of a 97 truck for $600. Does that sound like a decent deal?

It basically comes down to two things....price and overdrive. The 400 is cheaper but no overdrive. I just changed from a rossler 400 to a 4l80e just for overdrive. I didn't think you could get a brake to work with a manual valve body unless someone has gotten it to work. The brake would only engage when the tranny was in D....making it pretty much worthless.

The TCI reverse manual transbrake valve body only requires two power wires to be hooked up. One is for the transbrake and the other is for TCC engagement.
The TCC hydraulic circuit allows the the converter clutch to engage after the 3-4 shift. All you need to do is supply a 12 volt source to the TCC wire. The converter clutch engagement occurs 1-2 seconds after the shift to overdrive.
This valve body was tested for over 1K miles in our G body test car with a 502/502 crate engine.
The TCC hydraulic circuit allows the the converter clutch to engage after the 3-4 shift. All you need to do is supply a 12 volt source to the TCC wire. The converter clutch engagement occurs 1-2 seconds after the shift to overdrive.
This valve body was tested for over 1K miles in our G body test car with a 502/502 crate engine.

Shifting with the converter locked is a little rough with the Transgo -3 in my car, but I have already locked the converter a couple of times with the engine at full throttle, it isn't really that harsh. (modified stock converter).
I believe that the multi disc converters are intended to be locked once you are in high gear.
My -3 kit has worked very well for several thousand miles on the street, plus dragstrip, plus bonneville, my only complaint is a slow 2-3 shift, but I am going to test a spacer in the 3rd accumulator to try fix the slow 2-3 problem.
