Default Which oil for my T56?

I've read a few debates and nothing but debates when it comes down to this particular topic. It appears that its one of two. You either go with the factory filled Dexron 3 or you go to GM Synchromesh which I know from experience is super thick and made a world of a difference on my old 5 speed Ford Taurus SHO that had a very notchy tranny.

I'd like to get some input from folks that tried both of these fluids and can tell me which one they liked better. Appreciate the time.

*Is it true that the only way to get to the fluid is from the TOP of the tranny case?

no there is a fill plug on the side, i used a slide action pump to suck it out of the bottle and to put it in, otherwise i've used a "transmission" funnel to do it before. I just used the new dexron atf that covers all the old stuff.

I have been using Pennzoil Syncromesh in my T56. It is pretty much the same as the GM stuff but a lot cheaper. Car shifts very smooth w/ no issues. I know plenty of other guys who like / use it as well.

Good to hear, im gonna see if this is something I can do in my driveway maybe? Where is the plug located, is it visible if I get down and look at the side of the car?

Yeah it could be the shifter. I might remove it again and re-lube the base. Did you notice any difference when you flushed the dexron 3 and replaced it with the synchromesh?

Yes car shifted a little smoother. There is a drain plug and fill plug on your T56. You can get at them from under the car pretty easily.

These are two separate plugs I assume? I swore I saw an article somewhere saying that you have to each around the top to get to one of the plugs on the T56?

MGW hands down the best!!!! And I just put in GM syncromesh yesterday, it dose feel better but all my buddys use cheap old O'Reilly Dexron III with no issues. But the F'er that had my car before me used Redline. It sucked and I dident like don't wast your money!

even though factory spec. is dexIII as previously mentioned, i always runs synchromesh in all my gm trannys. the pennzoil is a close match and quite a bit cheaper. if your are one of those **** types, nothing ever beats the original.

The drain is at the back on the passenger side.

I use Amsoil fluids and I'll say that their synchromesh works great when the fluid is hot, really smooth, but it's clunky when cold. I've also used
Amsoil's synthetic atf (Dexron equivalent) and it works good as well and not as temperature sensitive.

Bottom right on passenger side towards the back of it it, uses a 3/8 drive extension and remeber to put RTV back on the threds as well.

O and remember to torque no more than 20 lb. ft for fill and drain plug.

Items Required:

-- Four quarts of Dextron III Automatic Transmission Fluid.
-- Fluid pump (make sure the threads are big enough for the bottle) or a suction gun would also work well
-- Oil drain pan
-- Set of Rhino ramps or equivalent
-- 7/8" wrench
-- 3/8" ratchet
-- Roll of teflon tape or RTV
-- Creeper to roll under car

I've only done it once but that's how I did it. Very simple.

Did you notice a difference in the way the car shifted after the GM oil?
