Tune after cam?

Tune after cam?
I'm installing a Torquer V2 cam next weekend in my 2000 Z28. Is it ok for me to drive around with a "base" tune, which I'm guessing this guy is doing with a hand held tuner, anyways, is it ok for me to drive around like that until I get the time/money for a dyno tune?

That is a healthy sized cam and if you have another vehicle, I would "advise" you to just drive it until you are able to get it tuned. Driving it to wherever you are getting it tuned is fine but as for everyday driving, I say no. But, I have never just gotten a "base tune" from a handheld. I'm sure others will chime in with a little more experience on handhelds like your Diablosports and such...

Most handhelds aren't for cammed cars. A bigger cam can make pretty drastic changes to air flow, with the VE going up a bunch especially at higher rpm. Plan some time on a loaded dyno, or a lot of time street tuning, you won't hurt any thing taking it easy if you need to drive it.

Also handheld tuners (in general) tend to lock the PCM. So I would be very careful using these as base tune. It is best to leave your stock tune in there as a base for the dyno tuner.
How far do you have to drive? A4 or M6? If M6 you can drive it there, just avoid going WOT and above 4K rpm. You can increase idle speed by fiddling with the idle screw in case it doesn't hold idle. Do 1/2 turns at a time and remember how many turns you increased so you can set it back quickly before dyno.

I have to drive from Mesa, Az to Yuma, Az, its a couple hours drive. Its a M6. So I should just leave the stock tune until the dyno, unless the programmer will not lock the PCM? Will it be safer to drive with a base tune? Yea, definitely making some dyno time

Well the distance is about 160 miles and 1200 feet difference in altitude. When you look at it its not that much of a difference but on a car with a cam like yours and un-tuned can make a difference probably for the better though. Just on that nice long flat drive resist the urge to open her up. Good luck. Specially right when u get on the 8 going towards Gila Bend.

Your other option and I would do this is tow her on an U-hall. I mean if you don't know if you can resist the urge to open her up its a lot safer and much cheaper than messing her up before running her right u know. 160 miles is a long time bro even at 85 mph ur looking at 2 hrs of wanting to see what shes got.
If ur still in Phoenix go see Nick D don't mess around the guys is the #1 LS tuner in all of AZ or AZ Mike he learned from Nic. If you need contact info let me know. the best $500 dollars you will ever spend that's including dyno time.

We can do you a mail order tune that will probably get you where you want to be. We offer free retunes for the first year, so a lot of people buy the $200 dyno tune & then make a dyno pull. From the dyno sheet we can make tweaks if they're needed to maximize power!!
