New guy could use some help
Hey everyone, new guy.. Long story short, think I spun bearing in my car.. Guess that's what ya get when you beat on a 100k mile car.
I'm stationed on pendleton and was wanting to try and replace the engine with a low low milage 383 longblock from a caprice.. I'm a helicopter mechanic so I'm not to bad with wrenches and what not.. Iv pulled an engine out of a foxbody before but never out of an fbody car esp. Never dropped one I kinda know how to do it and the autoshop here on base def has the tools..
I was just wondering if anyone would be willing to give me a hand or two and show me what the hell I'm doing.. I'll buy you lunch/dinner/beer whatever.. Any help would greatly be appreciated!!

97 lt1 6 speed pretty much stock ie. intake flowmaster.. was driving on 78 goin about 75 in 5th i can feel the car slowing down but im still in the gas look at the tach its going the wrong way i let off it dies.. pulled off to a gas station car wouldnt start it was hot but nothing crazy i think it was at 220.. we let it cool as we wait for a tow truck i get it turn turn over a few time but not start.. we get it back on base and i try to start her again, she stats and was making an awful metal on metal noise and wouldnt idle so i shut her off and there she sits...
the engine i found from a guy on craigs list it was in a 96 impala ss, the guy bought the car from pennselvania(sp?) it had 50k miles and the engine had 15k the car was rear ended so he is parting it out. the engines still in the car so im gunna go over there and hear it run before he pulls it out.. any one got some tips of what i should look for? i dont know much about lt1 cars? oh and he said the impala went 12.6 @ 112 spinning?

Well a 383 out of an Impala could mean anything. I would need specific engine specs to determine what fuel demand that engine needs. That being said, upgrading to a Walbro 255lph fuel pump and some SVO 30-36# injectors wouldn't hurt. What injectors does the engine have on it now?

im think they are 30s.. i will just try and use the injectors off the new engine im not sure if he was wanting to sell them but i might as well get thm.. would the stock pump be suffecient to push some 30s on a mild strocker(mild cam, ported lt1 heads)

The injectors don't determine the fuel demand, the horsepower level does. As long as the stock pump is putting out a solid ~43.5psi at WOT under load, you're good to go. A Racetronix fuel pump kit with a Walbro 255lph pump isn't very expensive when the time comes for a replacement.

just go with PCM's for less, It worked for us.
Here is the build we did, Not to much details on removal of engine, but that part is pretty straight forward, Lower the engine with k-member.
