Those with Motive gears...
Do your Motive gears whine?
Some background first I guess. My rear end has been howling, so I pulled the axles. Bad news, they were in good shape. My uncle works at a Jeep dealership and does rear end rebuilds a lot, and he says the carrier bearings are most likely bad. He also recommends that I have the whole thing rebuilt while I'm in there, and he even said that if I re-use the stock gears (3.23), they might whine a little.
I know I'm buying a rebuild kit. But I don't know if I should spring for new gears too. I'm on a budget, and new GM gears are out of the question. I want quiet gears, that's all I'm really concerned about. My uncle is doing the labor, so it's free for me. And I was thinking about dropping the cash I'm saving there on some gears.
So back to my original question, do your Motive gears whine? If they are quiet, I might go for them. I wasn't counting on gears at this point, but I figure since the rear is already getting rebuilt, why not? And no, I don't have the cash for a 12 bolt or S60. Thanks in advance.

All the blue box stock replacements I have done have been dead silent. My orange box 3.73s whine but I didn't fully break them in before pounding on them. Blue box Motives are cheaper too btw.

Is it whining or howling. Those are two different things.
Gear whine = incorrect gear setup period.
Howling (rumble) = Carrier bearings
High frequncy whine = pinion bearings
If the whine is only on decell and not accel, or vice versa, this is an incorrect gear setup. 9 times out of 10, IMHO, the noisy rearend is incorrect gear setup.

I've driven and road in a handfull of cars with motive gears and in my experiance they where always quiet "if properly installed". I have yet to see for my self a loud pair of motive gears that where set up correctlly. Hope that helps.

Nevermind, I found that info with a search. In case anyone else wants to know, the "blue box" Motive gears are the street gears, while the "orange box" gears (called Motive Performance gears) are stronger and better quality than the blue box ones (someone correct me if I'm wrong).

I have the 3.90's with a rebuilt rear, bearings, seals, girdle etc. They did not make any noise initially but now with about 4000 miles and 40 track passes with 1.50 sixty foot times it now makes noise on deceleration

Ok, time for an update.
I finally got my car back from my uncle's shop, and there is zero whine. These gears are quiet as stock. Granted I haven't taken it on the highway yet (still breaking them in), but I'm happy.
One thing I am not happy with though is the Ratech install kit I bought. The shims were not nearly big enough, and my uncle had to reuse the stock pinion and carrier shims. Luckily, the gear pattern came out perfect. The bearings were good quality though. It came with Timken, Koyo, and Torrington bearings.
