Question question: how do you set the valve spring height

just as the title says I was wondering how to do this. I have not done it before and i read the write up on how to install but how do you get a valve spring height at 1.800. Pictures would be helpful too. I am planning on doing a TR blower cam and a set of dual valve springs with the .650 max lift. This is for a turbo application, so if you can help it would be appreciated thanx ahead of time.

You need a Height Mike or a Snap guage! You measure from the bottom side of the retainer (where it sits on top of the spring), to the bottom/ locator? Sorry, I don't have a pic, but most camshaft sites have a pic on how to do this.

You use a height micrometer and will need shims to make adjustment. The shims are special hardened for the LS motors so just don't buy any shim. On duals, the springs will usually go under the spring seat. On beehives over the seat. All depends. If you are doing dual springs, don't install the seals until all heights are measured to make sure you don't have to pull them off again. In the photo, you can see the micrometer under the retainer on one valve. On the others, you can see the brass colored shims sitting on top of the second generation combined seal/seat.

Thanks for the help guys, so the shims are the things above the big ring and under what looks like a rubber top right? Just making sure I'm a little slow at night.

If you don't have snap gauges or a spring height mic, you can use gague blocks stacked to the appropriate height. Although, if you don't have either of the first two tools, you most likely won't have gague blocks!

can be done on car but you need to pressurize the chamber. summit has height gauges for around $45. Just make sure you get one that goes OVER 1.800 because 1.800 is where many stop and it won't work for anything over 1.800 and these motors use 1.8000 installed height
