I'm looking to get some DR's but i want to get something thats going to be able to hook 500rwhp to the ground. If you have drag radials or have had them, then i'd like you to post the brand and your opinions on them.

You will be happier with M/Ts. I had Nittos and now M/Ts same size(315/35/17). Unless you want milage. You will get a little more out of Nittos.

I have had M/t, BFGs and nittos and i like all of them for different reasons. Nitto's last the longest. M/Ts hook the best at the track. My 17's BFGs Comp T/As hooked hard on the street when new. The BFG G-forces hook good on the street and track and last alittle bit.

I just switched from Nittos to M/T's. 315/35/17 and its a night and day difference between the two. The nitto's got awesome mileage and were great in the rain. My m/t's do just fine in heavy rain also, though I do feel like I have to drive 10 mph slower than with the nitto's. As for as hook no competition. I can hook 500+ from a 35 roll. My nitto's couldn't 410 from a 25-40 roll.

M/T' s 315/35/17. They hook great on the street(600 rwhp). Been caught in the rain and they got me home safely.

I had Mickey Thompsons and they are amazing. The trade off is they don't last very long and are HORRIBLE if you get caught in even a little rain. I went with Nitto DR's this time around and they are great but don't hook like the mickeys did. The Nittos handle the rain well and last longer so they are a better all around tire but when it comes to hooking its M/T's FTW.

is it recommended to heat cycle the M/T's or Nittos?
shaun
10-25-2009, 11:34 PM
well it also depends on your suspention if its stock or got some upgrades.
my car has every thing aftermarket in the rear and on 270 40 17's it almost dead hooks and they get stickyer as they wear down.
i was at the track today and my friens has a 02 ss camaro m6 with a turbo and he said its around 600-700 hp and he was runing some 305 35 18 nittos and he actualy sheared off his arp studs from his moser then the wheels took off the track lol.
i like my nittos but im going to try the new toyo tq's next mickeys wear way to fast for the steet and its not like your going to constantly going through the gears so i say nittos or the tq's

what about Hoosiers?
As far as I am concerned the Hoosiers are flat out "Superman Tires" at the track. I have cut consistant 1.40s. I have the 315x35x17. However they just dont last long at all on the street. They have two narrow grooves in them to make them dot legal but in any kind of wettness its like your on ice.

Toyo Proxes TQ's are the best compromise between Nitto's, and MT's period. They hook well, and do bad ass in the rain. For any DD that wants to hook, Toyo's are the tire for you.
Here is my review on them. http://www.ls1tech.com/forums/wheels-tires/1177476-my-toyo-proxes-tq-review.html
I don't think I could be more happy with a tire unless they pleasured me.

I Stall it up to bout 2400-2500 and just flat foot it on the bottle..LOL! Pretty much hooks every time. Hav pulled the 275x40x17 fronts on many occasions.
Now running skinny's. Trust me, they do wrinkle!! Somehow it just works for me! I do have full suspension which really helps it hook too.

I have nittos on a basic bolt on car. They fit my application perfectly. I was looking for a performing street tire that also lasted longer than the competition. They hook on the street for what I need and have lasted and are just getting broken in at 5k miles.
i just got some 275/50/15 nittos, im hoping it helps my 60ft significantly. the best ive ever pulled off was a 2.0 but that was on crappy 245 kuhmos

I run Nittos on the street and they have been good to me. They feel like a normal tire in the rain but need a lil heat to get them to stick from a stop. The new Nittos coming out looks interesting but will probably cost an arm and leg.

I've had alot of different tires on the car. Nitto's were good for traction when the car was a bolt on with stock converter, but with a 3000 stall converter it spun em just like a regular tire. Great handling and great in the rain. M/T ET Street bias ply. Hooked OK on the street and track but horrible handling and in the rain. M/T ET Street Radial dead hooked my 4000 verter and cam car at the track, excellant traction on the street. Never hit rain with them but imagine they would be bad due to tread design. Have M&H Street Radials on it now. Haven't been to the track with them, but they hook better on the street than the M/T's and they have somewhat of a tread pattern to them so I would think they would at least give you a fighting chance in the rain.

I've had the BFG's, m/t et radial, and nitto dr's.
BFG on a bolt on ls1 auto stock converter (255/50/16): Hooked very well on street and track, they wouldn't spin. Wore out with very little abuse in about 3-4k miles. I'd never buy them again. Can be scary in rain.
M/T et radial on bolt on then cam only auto ls1 (275/50/15): Hooked very well on street and track as well, wouldn't spin before or after cam, lasted considerably longer than the bfg's. Can be scary in rain. Will buy again when that amount of traction is needed.
Nittos on current car in sig (275/40/17): My favorite drag radial for what I need to do with them. They dead hook anywhere from first gear roll, gave me a 1.79 60' at the track with a stock gear, stock weight. Have about 6k miles on them now with a lot of life left and are good in the rain.

Traction between the 2 are similar but the advantage goes to the BFG it does hook better and looks much wider! BFG does NOT have long life on the street...
Nitto looks smaller,it hooks well on the street and the track and will give more street life.

I've pretty much owned every single DR except the Hoosier, literally. Here's my review in order that I owned them.
BFG - I could never get them to hook. I would heat the crap out of them and no matter what they would spin. Life on them was horrible. I bought them slightly used and within about 6 months they were toast.
Nitto - I have ran Nittos several times. I LOVE them as a street tire but at the track I could never get them to hook that good. They hooked decent but would still spin a bit if not heated REALLY good. And by really good I mean one hell of a smokey burnout. On the street I could always get them to hook though. Hell, I broke 2 rearends with them streetracing.
Mickey - At the track they hooked very good with a nice warmup. I would leave around 3800 dead hooking then spraying the car about 15 feet out. I could never get my 17" mickeys to hook good on the street. But the 325/50R15's hooked very well no matter what.
M&H - I had these in a 325/45R17 on my Fikse's and they hooked GOOD. at the track and on the street they hooked the best out of all of them. But of course the taller sidewall probably had a lot to do with that. The only thing I didn't like about them is that they looked VERY narrow. More so that that Nitto's.
Toyo - I haven't ran these yet because I am still trouble shooting a problem with the car, but from the feel of them I'm thinking they are going to be between the Mickey and nitto.

a lot of mixed reviews about each brand, but good information. I don't know what brand to go with! I've been thinking about the Nittos since i can get them cheap but i see some of you saying they run skinnier (a 315 is compared to a 295?) I want a nice fat tire so what size would actually compare to a 315?

I wouldn't exactly say a Nitto 315 looks narrow, they are about right. But I'd say their size is on par with a 295. It's fat enough, but I would like a tich wider myself. I might give the M/T ET Street II 295 a try, still looking myself. Maybe you should just buy my 315s 01SOMZ28. The reason I want to try something else, is because the STR on my stall is too big, they spin, i bet your STR isn't as big as mine (2.6) Maybe you could hook with these.

I blame my STR when I lost to Thunder. Spin, spin. :burn:
I have a 2.6 STR, it's pretty high compared to others, so I need a better tire DR and maybe I can out launch him even on his slicks!
Basically :
Higher STR (2.5 or so) = quick '60 (if you can hook) low trap MPH.
Lower STR (1.8-2.0) = slower '60 higher trap MPH.

So i finally got to take my car out for a drive today with the new wheels/tires. This is my first time having a drag radial and i went with the 315/35/17 Nitto 555R. I was actually quite pleased with the tires performance after reading a lot of negative comments about the 555R. It was about 30 degrees outside but i thought they hooked well for little to no heat cycle, there was tire spinning but you could really feel them trying to bite. I think with a lot warmer temps and at a track these will hook great. BUT all this was off the spray...who knows what it will do when i'm using the juice.

Yeah I just put a set of MT E/T streets on my car and love them, there alright in the rain and wetroads just have to know their boundaries with them. I had BFG drag radials and they did alright, but I liked them because you could drive them in the rain just like a regular tire. But for traction the M/T's get my vote.

Now I have Nitto NT555 DRAG and they're sucks. Size 315/35/17. And now the time to get a new set for the rear. What do you guys prefer to use on the street? Just had my car at the track with the nitto 555R's and i must say i was very amazed! After all the bad feedback about the 555R's being crap and not hooking i must say i completely disagree. These things dead hooked for me at the track on 18psi. I was able to get a 1.8 60' (decent for a 555R i think) spraying off the line.

Nittos worked for me at the track. They didn't work all that well on the street tho. Maybe it's because I didn't heat them up long enough? first gear was a joke, second gear hooked half the time, and third gear hooked. lol. Maybe it's because I'm a M6 with 4:10s. I just sold me nittos yesterday and have some MTs in the garage. Just by looking at the MTs, I think they are gonna hook better.
