Default Overhead console

Surely by now someone has fabbed in an overhead console into their 4th gen. It would make for a nice place to put some aftermarket gauges, etc. If you've got a pic then post it up! I might have to do a little research into truck/suburban/GM car consoles to see if there is one that would blend nicely.

Okay, a little gay but pretty much what I asked for. I wonder if there is anything not so "kittish?"

Here's a decent link to a howto for 3rd gen cars:

Something like this would be cool:

A short version of the overhead console. The only real problem that I see with it is that it would probably get in the way of our rear view mirror, as its mounted pretty high up in the windshield.

Yeah the kitt version definitely looks like a spaceship... a look that I don't think I want to be associated with, lol. I think a decent GM version would be sweet though. Sorta fighter pilot cockpit like.

Here's another shot of a short console:

It would be neat if it could be integrated in a seamless fasion and not look really out of place...

A big obstacle that I see is that our headliners are pretty flat, while the trucks are dome like.

It's got potential, but would have to be done RIGHT otherwise it could be a catastrophe!

I think I might like to look into fitting two interceptors inbetween the mirror and headliner, kinda hidden and not bulky like the OH console. It would be pretty clean looking as long as it didn't interfere with the mirror (which the mirror could be moved down a hair I suppose). And just so you're not totally confused, I'm talkin about some kind of pod that could be fixed to the windshield... like this (only not so ricer):

Maybe something like this could be trimmed down to work well:

Not a whole bunch of room up there, but I'm curious to see where this goes.

I bet you could find something that will work up there. Keep it going. I want to see how it turns out

The trick is getting it to look stock. Its already got the cheap plasic look because its made by GM. No issue getting it to blend I'm just a little concerned with the flattness of our ceiling vs the curve of ours...

Okay, well I just went and looked at the console in my 05 Z71 and the ceiling is actually flatter than I thought, close enough actually to where I don't think it would be an issue. What I see being a problem is how long the front of it is. It would be a little uncomfortable to veiw the gauges in that spot in my truck as its more "beside" of you than it is in front of you. Now, after saying that I think that a bunch of trimming on the front might make it short enough to where it would be in the right spot. And by trimming I mean cutting out the curve of the headlinder and have it mated to the windshield and headliner.

You're right about the mirror, there might be a better option there. Either way, to get this thing in the right place for gauge viewing would be a trick and there won't be much room between the mirror and console...

If you go sit in your car for a second and imagine this thing there you'll know what I mean. The rear view mirror is in the perfect spot for glancing (like I supose it ought to be ) but a set of gauges 6 inches closer to you and you really have to move your eyes.

Let me go snap some photos...

Okay I've got some camera phone quality pictures with a trusty 12oz can for reference.

Notice how long the front of it is? There would need to be some serious trimming to get it to fit, and if I could cut the contour of the headliner into the top of it then it might not hang low in the the camaro.

Here's a shot from inside the camaro with the can crammed in the visor. See how close the mirror is to the headliner?

One more for good measure.

It would take a pretty low profile version and some mirror moving to get it to work, but I think the overal outcome would be SWEET! I'm moving this weekend and hope to have a nice garage to work out of by mid November. Maybe I can do some junk yarding in that time and locate a nice graphite console to start trimming up...

Maybe the same vehicle with a console will also have an LQ9

I actually have that 3rd-gen overhead console, but its incomplete and not yet installed.

I think it was an option on the early 4th-gen too.

More info here:

I'll get to it at some point.
