It depends on how much you are taking off and how many passes. My father owns a machine shop and if your going to do a few passes and are going to be "shaving" the piece of equipment something as simple as oil can be used if you are going to do a lot of milling and are going to be getting out a lot of "meat" off the piece of equipment then you use coolant. (making of rims)

Alot of milling applications are ran dry, it also depends on materials, inserts yada yada. It's a common thing especially in interrupted cutting; face milling, end milling. Air is usually used in place of coolant. Wd40 will leave an awesome finish on aluminum, but you do not want to put oils into a cnc machine, as you will contaminate the coolant.

I wish more videos were posted by builders and machinists showing the behind the scenes techniques of how are engine are made and assembled. There's alot of things, at least for me, that I have no idea what it is or how its done and seeing videos of it that makes us understand what all these terms and processes actually mean is just awesome. I can watch them all day.
I've been dying to see sleeves getting pressed into a block.
