how bad should 4.10's whine in my stock 10bolt. I know that you can here it whining from inside a different car while going down the road. How loud should it be and what should it sound like. My previous rearend whined before it went out but this noise sounds completely different. My friend says it shoudnt make any noise at all. Input would be great.

They will whine, my 12 bolt with 3.73's are louder then stock, but not to bad. My buddy put 4.10's in his 10 bolt and they are louder then mine by a decent amount. He shimmed, re-shimmed and tried several times to get it quieter, but its just the way they are. I did put the thicker 90-140 w oil vs the 75-90 and it helped a little....
Those gears whine because they have to be cut for strenth. 4.10's in a 10 bolt with a 6 speed is never a good idea to begin with anyway.
Also I do want to add that there is 2 different gear cuts if I'm not mistaken. convex, and concourse?? Can't remember, but when I set the 3.90's up in my chrysler 9.25 axle for my truck, the setup instructions were saying a few things about these different cuts. One is more quiet, but the other way offers more strenght. I'm sure with the rep. the 10 bolt already has that most companies are going with the stronger cut, but the noise is the downside.
How many miles do you have on it? If you put 200-300 miles on it, pull the cover off( fluid needs changed anyway after a few hundered miles after breaking). Look at the contact pattern again just to double check, also make sure pinion is tight, or at the right rolling resistance, and don't forget about the backlash.
Keep in mind that the pinion is very small in that 4.10 gear set for the 10 bolt. WHEN it breaks most likely the teeth on the pinion will be stripped out.

I just installed 4.10s in my 98 M6 and they make noise (howl). I am not resting back on the claim that they all make noise. I am going to try and reshim the pinion to get everything ideal (BL and pattern) and once I am happy with that and it still makes noise then maybe I will just throw it up to all 4.10s make noise.
My 3.42 made noise (not like the 4.10s though) and some say the housing can cause problems but I think my previous set-up was not correct.
did you set up the gear set on your car or did someone else do it?

I wasnt about to mess with it. I just paid someone to set it up. The shop said it wouldnt whine if set up properly but everyone i talked to said it would no matter what. If you ever get yours setup to where it doesnt whine let me know.

i just put 373's in my stock 7.5. the pinion bearing went out and ate up my shims with the stock 342. it whines but idk how bad. i can hear it from the drivers seat but idk if anyone else can from outside the car. it doesnt whine if i keep my foot slightly on the gas. and it isnt noticable in 5th and 6th really at all. exact same situation as yours. shop said it wouldnt, everyone said it would whine some. im taking another route to fix it; im just gonna make the exhaust loud as shit so it cant be heard :D

i set up my 10 bolt axle 3 times with 3 different sets of motive 4.10's they all whined from about 60mph up. I bought brand new AAM 4.10's and paid someone to do it and they whine from 60mph up... fuck it they are staying in until I blow it up and buy a $2500 S60 that whines.

Lot's of incorrect info in here.
No, the gears shouldn't whine if set up properly. I have set up a few sets of 4.10s in 10 bolts that were dead silent. However after having the shit beat out of them with drag radials and stout clutches over hundreds of miles, they did begin to talk.
I have heard so much BS as to why a steep gear ratio will whine, and it's all just that, BS. I have 4.88s in my daily driver and they are DEAD silent, and at all speeds.
You guys know that a lot of S10 trucks came with 4.10s in them right? Well I know they aren't all running around with whining rears.
There are certain ratios in certain applications that aren't as quiet, but most gear sets will be able to be set up and run quiet. 4.10s in a GM 10 bolt is one of those that can be quiet.

I just recently installed a 4.10 in a 85 camaro rearend. This was a used gearset that came out of a astro van.setup tooka couple hours and i also installed a pinion bearing spacer.I think i used a .028 pinion shim, and put .007 backlash in it and it is dead quite! if it's setup right,it shouldn't wine.!!

Yep, a quality gear set with good bearings and gaskets, that is properly set up should NOT whine at all.
