Hello guys and gals of Tech Happy Thanksgiving

Anyhow to the point in hand. I'm going to be doing a clutch swap this winter so I need to drop the trans. I'm looking into different jacks. I'm curious to know if anyone has tried a ATV/Motorcyle lift. I have found a few different jacks and adapters at sears so I'll post picks of two and let me know what you guys think. Or what you guys have used in the past.

First: This is an actual trans lift




Next is a adapter to fit on a jack that would work with the jack I have



Basically the plan is as follows. I have built a set of wooden ramps to drive/back on then the opposite end of the car will be lifted on to jack stands.

I have a trans jack from harbor freight (looks like your first pic). It was $50 and I couldn't imagine trying to drop the tranny with out it.

just took my tranny oyut and in 7 times with just 2 ton alum. jack. no adapters very easy just balance it on the jack.

My jack only has the small head. Its like a two inch plate so I need an adapter or a new jack.

I've never been a fan of Harbor Freight tools. You can rent a tranny jack from a tool rental place. I paid $15 per day for mine, and it only took one day.

Try renting one from Autozone, Pep Boys, Advanced Auto, etc.

Not sure if it makes a difference but I did my trans 3 times with a floor jack and I have an auto which is larger.

I borrowed the Harbor Freight tool from a friend. Worked great. The last several I've done by muscling it out balanced on a floor jack. The HF jack made it much more comfortable. I wasn't even tired in comparison!

Another "tip" find an old input shaft to use centering your clutch as you install it. It's MUCH easier to install the input shaft once you've done this. I guess the plastic POS that comes with the clutches isn't stiff enough.

i have been using a jack with a 2X4 cut to fit into the ribs on the t56 and it works pretty good.
The last time i used a buddy's OTC trans jack. it worked great but was always in the way

Motor Cycle Jack to get it under the Car, then man-handled the **** into position. Once you do a few of them they get lighter..lol

the biggest problem that you are going to have with the adaptor is the vehicle will have really high to get it under the car or you are going to be fighting with the tranny to put it on the jack under the car. i perfer to just muscle it in and out.

The great thing about a tranny jack is you can work the tranny around aftermarket exhaust and line it up just right so the input shaft slides right in. Then you just strap it down with a ratchet strap and don't have to worry about that heavy sucker sliding around.

I don't think the height will be a problem. I have made 2x10 ramps to back the car on then the fronts will be on jack stands.

I used the harbor fright trans jack.
It was 80$ but i searched online and found a 20% coupon..


I couldnt imagine doing a one man trans swap without it .

Might be a little red neck but both times I have had to pull my tranny I have used a double sheet of ply wood that I cut to be about a 1'x2' rectangle and bolted to the jack then cut a bunch of little 2x2's to match up to the ribs. havent dropped it yet. My girlfriends dad let me borrow a tranny jack but its designed for big rigs like school buses and Semi's so it didnt fit under my car.
