Default Help....Reclaiming my garage

So, the people that had the house before me close in half the garage to make a "craft room". Well im not so crafty and I need a two car garage....

i geuss the first step would be to put a door right here, in front of the two closet doors....

now, then i need to cut the power off to the room. then what?

what should i do about the tile?

I'll never buy a house that's had the garage enclosed like that. They also cost more because the "sq ft" rating of the house goes up.

My advice...hire a contractor unless you've done stuff like this before. You can do more harm than good to the house if you aren't careful. Most people get carried away with demo.

no wonder your garage was so small. put your new door into the garage at your tile transition closest to the garage past the closets. Take a sledge hammer and wrecking bar to the tile in the garage. pull the rock off to expose the framing. to me it looks like they built some joist to support their new wall and just tied them into existing studs. Appears there was no electric added.

If you dont feel comfortable installing a new door then have one installed. I feel you probably have enough brain and skill to rip every thing else out. I would rip all the rock off, put a kicker on the wall, then remove the joist, then start taking the wall down. Once you get it open you will find there is not much there but you will end up with a good amount of trash.

Edit: this is all on the assumption that the wall with the tall cabinet is the one that backs up to your "garage"

dude just take it down yourself just knock down the walls but make sure u look at the frame before knocking it down. break the tile with a hammer and add a door witch they come prepared at home depot or lowes already and add some trim around it. and if you wanna add some sheetrock just buy a couple of sheets and put em on yourself and call a sheetrock guy to tape and float the sheetrock. thats it

Dont worry I'll be right over. I'll take care of it for free and bring my own sledge hammer.

Yeah I see people close in garages all the time, I think it's a big waste. I bet it wouldn't be too hard to take out though. Doors are super easy to install too, course I'm a trim carpenter, but on a normal interior door 15 minutes tops to set a door. If you hire somebody they're gonna charge you a minimum of about two hours though for just the door. But if you have any questions, feel free to ask, not many problems I haven't come across, and it's a whole lot less complicated than a car. So I say do it yourself if you're mechanically inclined.

And the only sheet rock you have to take down is on the walls that will be removed. Cut the seams in the corners and somebody can patch back in where the walls were.

Sorry if someone has done this but JMDAO. Nothing looks more ghetto in a neighborhood than people converting a garage into a living space.
