Trans. Temp. 2: dual coolers or big single?
in case anyone missed the first thread, heres my situation. my trans. temp wants to stay at 190-195 city driving throughout the summer. trans has a deep pan and a b&m 24k cooler. it gets this hot even with my fans running at all times.
the lines have been checked and they are all flowing smoothly. i dont believe there is anything inherently "wrong" with the trans -- it doesnt heat up unreasonably fast. originally, i was planning on adding another b&m 24k cooler. however, flow restriction might be a problem. Soooooo...id like everyones opinion. if you were in this situation, would you put dual coolers on the car or just go for one big single, such as the b&m 28k race cooler? (or another big single?) thanks to everyone in advance.

I would vote one big single cooler with an extra fan.
Two coolers would be added restriction, plus more points for leaks to develop.

Perma-Cool makes a couple of units that have their own fan. OR B&M makes a 28k gvw cooler.
Generally, the 'Stacked-plate' design, used by B&M, is the most efficient for its size.

Reality check says... two coolers works plenty fine for me. There is no flow problems and the cooling capcity of a 24K and a 19K is certainly higher than a 28K with a fan. The leaks would only occur if you fail to properly put a clamp on the hose.
I've got a SY-3500 that can run 4 10.x passes off as fast as I can get back to the starting line and be below 200 degrees when I park it on a hot summer day. That is without a deep pan and with the tranny blanket on there keeping the heat in too.

what kind of temps do you see driving around town 2001? how do you have them mounted? back-to-back? side-by-side?

I've got them both mounted in front of the condenser in the prefered position. Passenger side is mounted with lines to the top and the driver side is mounted with the lines towards the passenger side. This gives a nice flow for the lines without any funny bends in the lines. I've got the fans on a switch so I can turn them on whenever I need some extra air in slow moving traffic.
Normal driving on the freeway on a hot day (90 - 95 degrees) is about 165-170. Normal city driving in the summer is about 180-190. Hot summer construction stop and go for 16 miles with the fans on is 200-205. Michigan construction season can be as nasty as you'll see anywhere. Easy 90 degrees plus, AC on and as may 1-2 up and down shifts as you'll see anywhere in the world.
The ultimate test though is 6 miles in the Woodward Dream cruise on 90 degree day with 50,000 cars and everyone waiting at the lights for the poor guys in the classics that overheat. Comfortable temps around 200 with some unscheduled demonstrations of lack of traction for the crowds.
I would say the trans blanket seems to add a good 10 degrees under most situations. Once you breakout of traffic and get the air moving though, the coolers bring things back down temp wise.
