Default hitting a wall @ 4500 rpm only in 1st

ok so i have a 87 s10 with a stock 355 in it , i shift it at 5k, from a dead stop i can nail it in 1st and when it hits 4500 rpms its like the motor hits a wall so i shift to 2nd and it goes all the way through till 5k no dead spot or anything, then i hit 3rd and it goes all the way just like 2nd, the motor feels very strong for being stock no missing or anything like that.
Is there any way it could be the distributor, its a adjustable mechanical / vacuum advance, and i cant adjust the the advance because the inside part that you turn is striped out. im going to get a new one because it is been thrown around before i got it. but other than that it runs smooth as silk and pulls hard.

Thanks for any help

Carb or EFI?

Sounds like you are running out of fuel at the top of 1st.Try to fill the tank all the way up and see if it happens. If it's a carb (holley), you might think about jet extensions for the rear.

My engine did this when the rear float level on the carb was too low. Instant wall at 6000 rpm. It's draining the bowl before it can fill.. Sounds fuel related, whatever it is.

I also had a 305 engine that would not pass 5500 because of the valvesprings..

Probably the carb. See if you can find a 750 Holley to borrow from a friend to try and see if it makes a difference. also check for kinked fuel lines.

a 750 seems like a little too much for a stock motor that doesnt make 300 hp, my friend has the same carb as i do right out of the box on a motor thats making alot more power than i do, my carb is new along with the motor and everything else if thats any help, im going to buy a fuel pressure gauge and go make a wot pass and see what its doing during the pass.

I have oversized carbs for years and always been pleased with my choices. Had pretty much a stock 455 Pontiac with a 830 DP Holley on it and really woke the thing up. Now I run a 950 HP series on it but it's around 550 hp. the 830 just wore out on me, it was 20 years old when it got replaced.

oh i forgot to mention that i had another engine about 2 mounths ago in this truck that had spun a rod bearing i had that motor in it for about a mounth or so with the same carb and dizzy it was the same as this motor other than the cam was bigger in it, it never any prob like this, the only thing that i changed was i went from longtube headers to mid lengths and i went from a airgap intake summit stage 1 dual plane intake, would that make any difference.

Thanks

The only thing I can think or is.........I will have to think about this for a while to come up with something new, haha. My mind is drawing a blank right now.
