I need some info on manual brake setups.


Ok for the street?

Ok to use with stock LT1 brakes? Do I need to specify when ordering?

I think Jegs carries the kit now. I believe it uses the Strange master and sells for about $200.00

I think one from an early S-10 will work too if you want to make your own firewall adapter and rod.

For those of you that already have the Strange master, did you have to modify your stock rod?

I have the strange master. It was a PITA to put in. I decided it would be easier to pull the pedal assy. to grind out that piece on the pedal rod so the bolt with the kit could go through. The rod with the kit I didn't have to mess with.

I got mine from Smithracecraft and is a strange master. Came with instructions to drill the hole for the pedal wasn't that horrid of an install.

i just did mine. yes, the pedal must be redrilled. you WILL need an adapter plate. i made mine in my garage. if u know someone with a bridgeport it isnt very hard to make. i picked up a dodge master cylinder from the local auto parts store for $42. it is identical to the strange one you get with prefabbed kits. i managed to have less than 50 bucks in the whole conversion, if you do it all yourself.

my manual master cylinder kit is a complete bolt-on with all the hardware, adapters, and linkage. price is 169.00 shipped and includes a Strange master cylinder. all manual master conversions require the pedal to be re-drilled to get the pedal ratio correct for a non power assist system.

fyi... the Strange master cylinder is definitely not the same as a reman Chrysler unit from the parts store. they are manufactured by Strange for performance and have the correct proportioning and valving for performance 4 wheel disc applications. Strange manufactures some of the finest drag racing type brake systems in the world.

We have had the kit out for years. We use a amster from Strange built for us. This is what we don't have a lot of the problems others do.

Yes the pedal needs to be redrilled.

im just curious, what specifically makes it built for 'performance'? i thought it was simply a machined bore with a piston. even if you buy a proportioning valve, its still cheaper to buy a chrysler unit.

jim1450, actually its a 1'' bore and is very easy to measure. i have seen alot of racecars and have noticed most people are using a strange master cylinder. but you didnt answer my question...what makes it better? my brakes are very important, but just because its made by strange, how will that do a better job pushing fluid thru the brake lines?

think i've put 2 rebuilt mc's on my truck in the past year. I now would think twice b4 putting one on the truck much less the rc.

I use Burkhart's Strange MC set up. Works good. I prefer the feel of the manual vs the power brakes. I like to "ease" into the manual brakes after the traps. Think I need another beer so I can go back to garage to finish the helicoil job on the transmisson pan bolt holes.

i got one of the kits from MWC, everything was a bolt-in, easy straight foward install and ran all my own lines. I did un-bolt my brake pedal and drilled it out on the work bench so it was easy. So you know this means you no longer have a "street car" Heres my conversion...

Good info in the thread..how streetable is a manual brake setup?

I only ask because I am switching to them and my car will see very lil street time.
