I usually change mine every other time I change the engine oil. So far it gets changed much more often than that, though, because I'm always draining the fluid to install something or fix a problem.

If you have a M6, you don't have to change the fluid. Stock A4's can be changed every 25K miles. I'm at 29K miles right now and I've changed my filter and fluid three times due to converter swaps.

I think it depends a little more on how you change it. If you are doing a complete FLUSH, you can probably get away with changing it less frequently. If your just draining the pan, better do it a bit more often...
plus, don't forget to change the filter

Under normal conditions, GM says 25k. The secret to long fluid AND transmission life is keeping the operating temp BELOW 200°! Whatever it takes to accomplish that.
“DEXRON III transmission fluid, which has a 100,000-mile service interval under normal use.”
Quoted from: http://media.gm.com/product/gmc/tran...s/4l60ben.html
SPX_Filtran, the company that makes the OE filter as well as the AC/Delco aftermarket actually warrants its products for 100,000-miles (under normal conditions) also.

I just did my 4th filter install at 90,184 miles today. So far I have used 2 AC, 1 Purolator, 1 Deutch filter: Mobil 1 ATF first change, Quaker State the 2nd, GM the 3rd, Valvoline the 4th.
Would change more often, but all I have is Rhino ramps and I'm getting too freakin' old to be crawlin on the ground all the time.
