Default Alternator conection....??

Hi, i´m a little confused on the alternator connection, maybe someone can help.. I´m doing a 04 GTO ls1 conversion on my 73 camaro, i have all the wiring ok BUT i´ve read that the alternator need a kind of resistance for a proper usage and not not have any problem? Is that correct, what do i need to considered to make the correct conection? , as i mentioned i have the 04 gto wiring as a guide, but it does not appear any resistance on any wire. Maybe the light on the dash do as a resistance? Can i connect it directly to de gauge (autometer)?

Regards

you don't need it. That is for the 98 models only. The newer ones are ran thru the pcm so you will not have to worry about it.

It's not for 98 models only. I burned up an alternator for a 2000 LS1 because I didn't have a 470 ohm resistor inline with the 12V that excited the alternator. If you check the voltage that the pcm puts out to excite the alternator on an f-body harness, I think you'll find that it's only around 10 volts. I went back with the resistor and didn't have any more problems. If you put 12 volts to the post that excites the alternator, it's living on borrowed time. The resistor is for a carbed setup, not injected. The pcm will control the alternator correctly on injected engines.

Like I said it is only for the 1998 model the pcm did not control the alt in an
"INJECTED CAR". His car is injected.

Damn, I hate it when I do that. I half *** read the post and then tried to answer it. I didn't realize that the 98 pcm didn't control the alternator. They do have a wire going to the alternator, but it's not a turn on wire. Do you know what it's purpose is?

One more thing, can I conect the brown wire directly to the gauge (voltmeter)?
