Default T56 wont mate to LS3 engine

I have a T56 TUET2066 which I think is for a GTO, and have tried to mate it to my LS3 crate engine today. It doesnt quite bolt up - the input shaft is too long by about 9mm.

The end of the splines are 5mm from the bellhousing face (inside bellhousing) and the face of the bearing in the crank is 14mm outboard from the engine face.

I thought the trans would fit ok onto the LS3 but there is obviously something wrong. I can get the input shaft machined down if necessary. Is there a website showing how to remove the input shaft? I wonder also whether there is an option to fit a different pilot bearing further into the crankshaft. There seems room behind the present bearing. The current bearing flush with the end of the crankshaft. I cant see any other options!

Any help would be appreciated. I am new to this engine and there is not much help around here in UK.

I think you are running into an issue b/c the LS3 was made to fit with a Tremec TR6060 from the factory. It may take a little work but you should be able to get it to fit.

Which pilot bearing are you using? It sounds like the same problem I had when i tried to use the GM Performance Parts bearing. I ended up having to use a stock LS1 bearing

I'm thinking it's a Pilot Bearing issue..like mentioned he needs the F-body one.

Thanks guys. I think it needs the smaller pilot bearing. Thats a relief! I tried to get one from the local dealer today and they wanted Ł65 ($100)! I think I need to move to the States

Sorry to bump this up. I just dropped my LS3 (from my 2010 Camaro SS) into my 2004 GTO M6, and it wont tighten up all the way (about a 1/4 gap between bellhousing and engine). I assume I need the small pilot bearing based off this thread and the sticky?

If your original engine used the needle roller in the end of the crank, then you would need that same setup unless you used a taller bellhousing or similar to create the extra distance.

So yes, your LS3 probably has the bearing in the outer position, not the needle roller further in.

stevie, yeah, the original engine is a 2004 LS1 (gto’s original motor).

I believe the crank can support either bearing type: needle and roller.
So you would need to replace just the pilot bearing.
