Default Well its official.. im almost unemployeed..

I posted this on the SLP board yesterday.. so here it is for the TECH crowd..

Well I found out today that after 12 years of service at Panasonic i'm being laid off effective October 31st.. Even though my territory (half the United States) is performing well the other half is tanking so they need to cut costs.. the only part that bugs me is that they drop me (im at around 90%) and the keep the other guy thats at around 45%.. He has 14 years with the company so its a seniority thing..

Well its been a great job.. worked at home.. lots of time with the whippets.. traveled and saw the country (got to meet Andy and Mark in IL).. but life is what it is.. Ive already got a few leads and im getting over 6 months severence pay..

Just strange thinking of working somewhere else when ive been there for so long..

Maybe I will take some time off to REALLY detail the Camaro

I drove the SS to personel so I could go out with style.. lol.. took off the T-tops and enjoyed the ride (knew what was going to happen).. A guy in on of those sporty Lexus cars tried to run me and I embarrased him so bad he ran the next red light rather than pull up next to me.. so all in all not a bad day

Wow that really sucks to hear that. I know what you're going through,
well partially. I work at Worldcom, and in the past two years I've
made it through three rounds of layoffs. Thankfully I still
have my job, but I'm the only one left from my department. It's lonely
and the atmosphere is downtrodden, but at least I'm still getting paycheck.

Good luck with your future endeavors, and I'm sure you'll land on your feet.
Oh, and about the "time off to REALLY detail the Camaro", this just plain
scares me trying to think of what you're going to do next!

Good luck!

Like I said over there sorry to hear bad news like this, I still think you should take that job in Chi-Town.

Anyway, best of luck on your career search.

Dude, you should seriously consider opening up your own custom detailing shop.. You are the guy that comes up with the ideas that other people dream of, but don't remember the next day.. I wish you luck man, and I'm sure you'll find something soon!

SSG--Z28 is right. Your car speaks for you. I'd gladly pay you to detail or mod my car. Good luck with whatever path you choose.

Steve.... after reading that.... the first thing that came to my mind was you need to open up a customization shop then finished reading this thread and saw others with the same idea. Keeping up with 3 race cars is a 2nd full time job and hardly enough time to work on my SS. if i didn't live in virginia and be 3,000 miles away ide be on your waiting list. I know this wouldnt stop a lot of people. Everybody's seen your work and they know you do it right the first time. Maybe it wouldnt hurt to look into this. And about your job, this Buds for you.......

Its would be a blast to sell stuff in the automotive industry.. I love to sell.. I love cars.. its a perfect match. -- Now to see if it works out.. if not I have a few other "irons in the fire"

Thanks for all your support.. If i get a job quick enough then this will be a $$$ bonanza.. considering I pick up a check for $45k at the end of the month

I would love to have a car customization shop.. but all my customers are spread over the entire country.. lol.. maybe I could make it mobile

Thanks again everyone..

Sorry to hear your news. It's always hard to hear that your world is getting shaken up. Between October and your 6 months of severance pay you have 7 months to find something good or even better. Anyone with an attention to detail such as yourself should look good to almost any employer. Keep in mind that you may find something better! Good Luck!

I don't know if this will make you feel better but I too am officially unemployed as of Oct.4 due to the closing of our plant based on over capacity.
I worked for Superior-Essex formerly Alcatel Telecommunications as a fiber-optics technician for 24 years. No severance either. Canadian law states that they need only give us 14 weeks notice to avoid severance payouts. Now apparently they are borrowing money from our so-called locked in pension funds as well. Worse yet there are no other related jobs in our city. This really sucks.

I know how it feels and wish you Good Luck and continued success in whatever field you pursue.

Ah, the 'white collar depression' strikes again. Sorry to hear about your situation Steve. You're always welcome in Chicago but wait until April or May. We're about to go into the deep freeze soon. Too soon - the leaves are already changing and falling off.

Steve, take my advice. You will never get rich working for someone else. With your reputation and proven attention to detail (I try to make my car look as half as good as yours), you should really open your own business. Go to www.sba.gov and check on the grants and loans available. You'd be surprised at what is possible for ANYBODY who wants to start their own business. All that is required in a good business plan. Trust me and try it.

i say if you bounce right into a new job.. you should use a chunk of that severance pay and treat yourself to a going away Z06.

Sorry to hear about your job Steve. I know how I felt when I got laid off in Dec. It was the first time in 40 years I didn't have a job to go to. Really lousy feeling. But, if it had not happened I wouldn't have the chance to get the house or the job here in Wy. Much calmer lifestyle here ( read small town). There are lots of other jobs out there. Trouble is, it will probably be lower paying. Hope you can find somethng fast. Good luck to you. Jay
