Question Does tint affect radar detectors

Ok I would like some clarification on this topic cause I haven't seen it answered or talked about much. Does tint hinder the performance of a radar detector enough that you don't need it or does it affect it very little that we wouldn't even notice? I plan on having mine mounted directly under the rearview mirror but my windshield will be getting tinted so no more visor strip. Thanks for any info regarding this!

I don't really think so. I'm running a Rocky Mountain radar and that thing was picking stuff up MILES out when I was driving through the desert. I have mine mounted on the top of my windshield so it is just barely poking out under my windshield strip. it's mounted up pretty high and I was worried if it could 'see' anything from the rear, yeah it can.

Rocky Mountain radar kicks ***!!

I had the window in my old car tinted 3inches down and the detector behind it.I knew a place when the local police always had one of those pull behind radar guns that let you know how fast you were going.I put the detector behind the tint and did another pass with out it from behind the tint.Really no difference.Tint was 20%.Hope that helps.

Depends on the tint. There is metallic based tint and that will hurt the range of lots of signals inside the car. Most new tint you will find is more ceramic based and that will barely effect it. Check out www.radardetector.net for some info.

if you request non-metallic tint from the tint shop it will NOT effect radar reception. the only thing it could effect would be laser detection..but unless you have a laser jammer or are lucky and get laser scatter off a car in front of you, your screwed anyway.

oh..and just a suggestion..mounting above the RVM makes for a cleaner location and keeps it out of sight from prying eyes.

Will the non-metallic tint fade or turn purple? I planned on getting the blendmount so thats why I said it would be directly under the RVM.

Ceramic tint won't fade, unless you are willing to wait 10 years for it to start turning purple. It will come with more of a bluish shade to it when your looking outside from inside the car.

Oh I got ya. Will ceramic tint interfere with the detector?
