Best radar dector on the market
Looking to purchase a radar dector for my girlfriends dad as a birthday present. Haven't bought one in years and I'm sure technology has changed them a bit. Any insight would be helpful. Thanks.

if your lokking for something that wont be outdated by a newer model go with a valentine 1. The directional indicators are a big plus. Anytime theres a update you just send it in for a reflash/ upgrade.

Wrong. It does have a mute button and you can program it to lock out false readings and auto mute. However the thing the other has over it is gps thats pretty much it

The escort 9500ix! This is what I have, It has mute button, it will talk to you and say "Laser alert", It has GPS sooo it will tell you how fast you are going, where every Red light camera is, and it will alert you, speed traps and speed trap cameras! The distance was amazing and the best feature is that it picks up like false alarms for example stores and after a few times it will use the gps and remember the location and wont alert you so you dont get all kinds of false alarms.

V1 hands down. Buy a radar detector one time and that's it. The arrows really help. Escort came out with a dual antenna model but no arrows....fail. Even people with Escort ZR4 laser shifters run V1's for radar. No joke look at the YouTube videos.
The 9500 models are nice for the GPS but you have to pay for GPS updates. What is it, every year? I'll use my HUD iPhone app for that thanks. Lock out false signals GPS marked? ....yes and by accident you can lock out a cop too. Read the radar detector forums, yes it happens.
Bottom line both models are the top of the line and you won't go wrong with either. Do a search here and on the radar forums to find the one you want.

I have had quite a few different ones over the years. I bought a V1 about 4 years ago and love it. You don't know how handy the arrows are until you have them. I gave my wife my old 8500 and I always catch myself looking for the arrows when I drive her Avalanche.
My main issues with the V1 is that you have no mute on the cord unless you buy the extra cord with it built-in. With my truck its not so bad but with a 7' reach to an F-body windshield it would get annoying to push the button on the unit.
I drive alot for work and it has saved me and or given me a the piece of mind that they weren't radaring many times.

I bought my V1 in 1998. I've had to replace the mounting cups a couple times, but other than that, its worked flawlessly.
I plugged in the S/N a couple weeks ago and it told me there were updates available, but that it probably wasn't worth the time and expense to have it updated.
