I am having an issue with what I believe to be my AC compressor. Here is the deal:

When I turn my AC on, a knocking noise comes from my AC compressor (or at least in it's general area). When I turn the AC off, the noise goes away.

Do you think it is my compressor going bad? Bad bearing? Or do you think it may have something to do with the clutch?

Pardon my noob question. I am not familiar with the AC systems...

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I really need to fix this issue before it starts getting warm here in Michigan...

Time for a new compressor, and a whole system flush. The flush is necessary because when the compressor goes, you end up with junk throughout.

I was afraid you would say that... I was hoping it would be a more simple fix.

Does anyone know where to get the best price on a new compressor?

Does anyone have a write-up of how to replace it?

I will sell you my compressor of my car, hell its barely been used, its a vert so I never use the a/c, and well cant since I dont have the condessor installed or the cooler. The compressor is from 04 block so its newer than my car. A reman is showing 269.99 on advance, so ill ship you mine for $220. PM me if your interested.

Pretty simple to replace it, remove belt, loosen bolt on back of unit holding in the lines, unplug wires on side, unbolt from mount. Thats it.

Will I have to do anything with the refridgerant (freon)? I am assuming you will lose some when you pull this out...? Or am I wrong?

Yeah you will have to discharge the system, once you loosen the bolt in the back a little , it will start to discharge, just put a towel around it so it does not get everywhere.

You will have to buy a R-134a Refrigerant recharge kit, think they cost around 30 bucks for a big can with a pressure guage that tells you the correct pressure. Many come with the oil in the can already, just have to look (its needed to lube the system). May sell the cleaner in a can too, not sure.

Look up this on advance's site, Part No. AFK-11CS , has lube in the can already.
Part No. CA-1/6977 for the flush, I would flush it with the compressor off that way it just flows out from the connector thats now disconnected.

If all you do is replace the compressor, recharge the system and go with it, you'll be looking for another compressor within 30 days.

Ok, so today I was driving around and I turned on my AC for a short while to see if it was still making the annoying noise. It ran just fine for a little while, then I started to hear a noise that sounded like a bad wheel bearing, then my AC stopped blowing cold. Now nothing but warm air blows when the AC is on. I am guessing my compressor finally failed? What do you think?

No, the knocking was coming from the compressor.

Always replace the orifice tube, also. It will be clogged full of bits of your old compressor.
