Tightest converter for the street? Recommendations??
I am thinking maybe it is the stock one as far as being the tightest .. lol. Basically looking for a very tight (not loose) converter for the street. I am wondering if someone makes a converter that behaves just like stock or better at lower rpms until it flash stalls to whatever rpm with a high str. Needs lockup.
Car will never see the track and may or may not be cammed (not in the short tem anyway and if he cams it it will be 220 duration or lower)
I am helping my friend and he is taking out the transmission to replace the flexplate so while thats out I told him might as well upgrade the converter.
stock 5.7 2001 firebird and stock 4l60e with 3.23 gears

You'll probably get a lot of brand loyal responses here. Generally, the ones used most commonly on this forum are all good. Just get one with a high STR. Despite the STR, a 4000 stall is not going to behave the same as a 2500 stall on the street. Some guys shy away from modern stalls because they remember how they felt 20+ years ago...like driving in mud!
I run a 2800 and I'm very happy with it. Sounds like this might be the right size stall for you. Just be sure to get a tranny cooler installed to keep temps down. Stalls generate heat and heat kills 4L60E's! Also, it will depend on your lockup settings, but I drive in 3rd gear since it will lock at a lower speed which reduces slip, heat and the mushness of the gas pedal. At highway speed Drive is fine.
Hope this helps!

My friend wants basically a more efficient converter that doesn't require anymore gas to get moving than stock but will stall higher than stock.

i run a 3200 vigilante and it is a nice stall it is very tight, and i can hardly tell it is there, as for brands i would only consider Yank, Precision Industries, Circle D, they maybe high up in the price range but as for performance you cant touch them with a off brand converter

I ordered a $7xx.00 converter from a sponsor here. Talked on the phone, spent a lot of time telling the guy what I did not want--loose down low.
Well guess what I got. Loose as **** down low.
I ordered another converter $7xx.xx from another sponsor on this site, talked on the phone. He told me in technical terms what makes a converter tight or loose down low. I got exactly what I wanted, tight down low and efficient up top.
It's too bad I can't mention names, I don't feel like getting flamed or getting talked **** about. So in other words due to the nature of this forum I cannot help you.

I have a PI Vig. 3200. With 2.73's I did not like it very much but now that I have 3.42's it's much better. Still far from a "stock" feel but not bad for street and DD driving. It sounds like a 2800 would fit you the best.
But really the best way to make a decision is to try and find someone near you with a stall that has similar mads and see if they will let you ride in or drive their car.

Although ive never driven a stock stalled car, i have driven my car with an Edge 4000 stall (Dont know the STR, was in the car when i bought it) And now have a Performabuilt 4000 stall (1.69STR) and am very happy with it. I havent had it to the track yet, but street driving isnt a problem at all. I love the setup, besides the fact that traction is non existant in first. 400rwhp, Performabuilt stall/Level 2 '60e, 3.73s.

Can't help with a brand name no, that was my reason for saying that.
But you know what, **** it. Circle D sent me exactly what I did not want even after talking on the phone.
FTI built me exactly what I did want, first try, Greg knew exactly what to do to get what I wanted.
So I've got the front of a circle D with the pump of an FTI.
There you go. Have a great weekend buddy!
