you would need $10k just to buy one share of the DOW

with $10k you could buy a bunch of different shares that will out perform the DOW and not worry about one that does good or one that does bad.
less risk and more gain

well the DOW isn't the only one that lost a lot and regained a lot. there were actually quite of few of the cheaper ones that dropped to like a penny and went back up...

The OP could have made some money short selling. (??)

I transferred $1000 from my money market into my S&P 500 Index fund. Figured it will go back up soon and so it was a chance to make a few bucks when it does by grabbing a few cheap shares.

you got the right idea, Todd.

there are even products out there that will double and triple short certain indices. Just so you know, these are not long term tools, they are geared more for day traders that get in the market in the morning and sell by the market's closing. the investment fund that i was involved with at texas state was thinking about triple shorting treasuries around the first half of 2009, but our IPS wouldn't allow us to be that active with the portfolio.

Interest rates are low so money markets are paying squat. Just a place to have a little emergency stash.

If I have a little extra money in there, I try to buy into the dips of the market.
