Default Mr gasket 5716 head gaskets fubared out of the box?

Hey guys, I took my mr. gasket 5716 head gaskets out of the wrapers and some of the blackish gray elastomer coating peeled off on the block side of both head gaskets, and stuck to the cardboard packaging. Do you guys think these gaskets will still be ok to use?

I had read about this problem a few years ago when doing my heads. It was recommended that you keep them in the freezer for 30 min or so before opening them to prevent this. I did that and was still very careful opening them and they were good. Seems like this problem has been going on for years with these gaskets. You would think the company would make a change to the package design by now. I guess they figure people will just keep buying more when this happens since it's not an expensive item. More $ for them.

Ya thats why I made this thread because I was wondering if anyone had this problem and used them. The last set I used were fine. I'm not going to use these gaskets and will not be buying another set just to risk it happening again. I think im gonna use the Impala gaskets now.

This was an epidemic thing years ago. They were supposed to fix it. You might have one of the old packages.

I just got these gaskets as well and a most of the black material peeled off with the plastic. So I take it I need to send them back? Or are they good to go?

Don't use them. Not worth the risk I ended up using GM impala headgaskets there a **** hair thicker or so they say. They looked identical to the 5716 when I compared them. They are packaged in a bag, so there is no chance of the black elastomer peeling off. Send them back if you can and get the Impala gaskets.

Got the victor gaskets in the mail today and they are in a much better package than the mr gasket version. No chance of the material peeling off with the packaging. And they are cheaper.

I had no idea other companies had issues with packaging head gaskets. I always order the Fel Pro set, just open a box!
