Default oil level, too high?

I just had my buddy change the oil on my car over the weekend. He said it was "just a bit over" the operating range mark on the dipstick and not to worry about it. I checked the dipstick today, car's sat since Saturday in the garage. Its showing me about 1/2" past the operating range mark. Should I be worried?

Thanks.

yes you want to drain a little bit out. You'd rather be low on oil then too much.

Get that extra oil out before bad things happen.

Some auto cross people will put a half quart over in the motor, but if you don't know how much is in there just drain it to the proper height on the dipstick.

autox puts it over so they dont go low on the hard cornering, either that or convert to a dry sump system...on a street car, this is bad.

All you people preaching half qt over will cause damage should try it first. Hard corners isn't the only place an lt1 will top pressure due to sudden demand. I run mine half over all the time and it gets 100s of miles a week and it doesn't hurt a thing.

**** Grob, I ran that thing a half quart over forever before you stole it from me. Makes you wonder if the awesome oil pressure you get compared to others with similar miles has something to do with not starving the bearings of oil during hard acceleration and such during it's life. Of course there was the religious use of high flow & over sized oil filters too.

I think there is a distinctive difference between running a 1/2 quart and running the oil level 1/2" over the full mark.

without looking at the dipstick...i estimate that to be about 3/4ths of a quart. nothing i would worry about.

I'd say its close.1/2" is pretty small, shouldn't be much over half qt, but he could measure the add 1 qt mark if he wanted to be exact.

What could happen to the engine if there was a extra quart of oil in the pan?

looks like we're getting waaaaay too technical here (especially for someone who hasnt responded after the original post ) 1/2 inch, 3/4 quart blah blah blah...regardless, it's a bad idea to run your motor overfull on oil...drain that **** till the full mark...problem solved.

It's only a bad idea if it's causing issues. Do you really think the moment you get above the full mark the crank is running through the oil?

Thanks for the replies fellas. I haven't replied back yet because I'm busy with life and work.

Its def 1/2" over the full mark, I checked it 4 times to be sure before posting this thread on Monday. The day it got changed I drove the car hard couple of times and it ran the same before getting the oil change except felt slightly smoother during idle. Didn't spot any leaks.

I planned on draining it but thought I'd post here and see what you guys would say. Its just going to be a bitch because the car is lowered and I can't find my jack stands (just moved).

why chance it? obviously GM put the "full mark" there for a reason. He's asking a simple question.
Question: Is it bad to have oil over full?
Answer: It could be, or it might not be.

None of us are there to actually look at the dipstick and to see the exact conditions, so maybe before we start telling him to run his oil at an "autocross" level or a level that "may improve oil pressure if you use an oversized filter", I think we better give a general answer to a general question.
simplist solution: drain some out, it's a simple task, better be safe than sorry.

You must not have read any of this head. A little over isn't "chancing it". It's a good thing.
