Default 1998 Ws6 92k 5800.00

Ii talked to a guy who was a cosigner on his buddies black auto ws6 it has 92,000 miles. He just wants the payoff balance. everything stock and in good shape except. He said there is a howling coming from the rear end. But he said doesnt affect the drivability of the car. Said nothing leaks and drives great. Any comments or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thinking about buying it and selling my 1992 convertible with 62,000 original.
Thanks Mike

Sounds like a sweet deal except for the rear end. These cars dont have the strongest differentials. That howling probably means its going to crap out soon. So just figure the cost of a new rear end on top of the price, because that is most likely what is going to happen in the near future. Dont let it deter you if it is a really nice car though. Still a sweet deal IMO. I would love a WS6

You can have a local shop rebuild your current rear. Doing this gives you the peace of mind that it is fresh unlike a used. or you can find great deals in the classified section on 12 bolts or 9". Depinds on what your plans are going to be with the car.

But yes that sound like a good deal.

What kind of '92 low mileage 'vert are you thinking of selling in order to buy this car??
Off hand it does NOT sound like a good deal when it needs a major repair right off the bat. What else is wrong with it? Do your homework seriously on this car. I bet it needs many things if he let the rear end go to hell, and the last car you need is a $10,000 '98 that will have 100k miles on it before you see 2011. The $$ adds up quick. Tires? Brakes?? Maintenance?? Prior owner abuse?? You get the picture. Be careful.

Thanks for the responses. I haven't been able to physically see or drive the car yet. I'm bringing my buddy that owns his own shop. So basically its his call. I know 92k is alot of miles. I am just looking to get some opinions before i look at it.
I have a stock 1992 Trans AM convertible 62,000 miles White ext. gray int. Black top. Black GTA rims. its a cruiser nothing speacial. All original.

You may feel that the '92 'vert is 'nothing special' but I can tell you there are NOT many left on the road. Unless yours is in just fair or worse shape I would not sell it. It will start the upward trend in pricing as the 25 year mark rapidly approaches and beyond. Convertibles are always sought after, especially stock examples with decent mileage. Throw this thought and idea 'out the window' though if the car needs restoring or is rough. I'm talking about a decent example. To get rid of the 'vert for a close to 100k car is not the best thing to do in my opinion. Think about it anyway. Good luck!
*** Any way you can put that '92 away for awhile if it is in decent shape??

It's one of 663. Maybe I'll keep it. Like I said It's more of a cruiser 305 TPI. Just looking for something with a little more pep. Im leaving my car stock. The wife would kill me if I had both. But I didnt even drive the 98 yet so who knows. I love the 92 but when you have something.......you always want something else. If had the 98 I'd probably want my 92. Thanks again for the advice

You're welcome! I know exactly how you feel. One car is never enough and in my case I have 3 nice rides yet wouldn't mind a 4th. It is an illness I guess. Maybe explain to the wife that it is a decision that could possibly affect her financial future as well. She might agree about a 2nd car and put the '92 away to eventually appreciate in value. In the meantime, weekend cruising won't add significant miles or hurt the condition of the car. You certainly won't lose anything unless you have to pay for storage.

3rd gen drop tops are a blast- my dad has a 60,000 mile 91 vert. Not the fastest car in the world but a really fun car on nice days!
