for people running lt1's without cats
i have a 1996 6 speed firebird Formula with an slp loudmouth 1 cat back and intake and i want to hear what it would sound like without the catalytic convertor. also what would it do to my car, would it make it lose power? i know the 1996 cars came with 2 cats but how would i get rid of or "gut" the cats? would i gut one or both? i know its not legal to run without cats but i just want to know what it would sound like an how to do it exactly.

I actually did exactly what you are talking about. My cat clogged up so i hollowed it out. Just took it off and chipped away at the inside with a long screw driver and a bfh. I didnt like the way it sounded. It was too loud and the tone wasnt appealing to me. Sounds better now with a high flow cat. But im not crazy about the Loudmouth system. I want to swap it for a hooker.

the loudmouth will probably sound better with the cats actually... its really really raspy with out them. and if you did "gut" the cats its both or nothing because yo udont want one bank of the engine having more back pressure than the other. But you might not benifit in power from loosing the cats seeing as the car sounds fairly stock and it can actually loose power with out the back presure it needs to run correctly.

I tried gutting out my cats and it was the biggest pain in the ***! One of my cats actually separated on the inside and was making this loud clunking noise. If your gonna take it off you might as well get a Y-pipe and headers, or just by a new high flow cat set-up. I'm running Headers with a Y and Loudmouth1 and it is super loud and raspy. If you don't want to get a ticket or **** off your neighbors I don't recommend this route.

I also noticed a lack in low end torque. Gutting the cat seemed to move the powerband up some. In town driving was not as peppy. Im much happier with the high flow cat. Got the low end back and its still considerably louder than the stock converter. Mine is a single cat though. I would say if you plan on doing headers ever, do that now, dont waste money on something you are going to change.

My car runs very smooth and revs up real quick without cats. I love it. It also doesn't stink or anything like that (I have smelled cars that stank without cats).
Whoring my **** out (it's not a loudmouth, but it is basically nothing but 2 bullet mufflers):

I run Borla with QTP electric cut out and ORY. Sounds crazy wide open and just right about half way open. The electric cut out is perfect when the cops are near. Before with wide open Borla I got pulled ALL THE TIME. BTW stock manifolds. Lost a little down low without cats and gained a little up top.

without the cats, it will sound a little louder. You'll get more pops and crackles and that raspy sound depending on your muffler choice and whether your sticking with a single pipe or switching to duals.
