Thumbs up Man Looses Arm While Lighting Fireworks

http://abclocal.go.com/wabc/story?se...cal&id=7536120

ISLIP TERRACE, New York (WABC) -- Police say a Suffolk County man is in the hospital after losing his arm while trying to light fireworks.

The incident happened in Islip Terrace on Long Island. Police say 36-year-old Eric Smith was leaning over to light a mortar containing fireworks, but was unable to get out of the way in time when the blast blew off his left arm.

Family members, who were there for a July 4th celebration, quickly grabbed the arm and put it in a cooler.

Smith was rushed to South Side Hospital where doctors are trying to reattach the arm.

Police say another person at the party also was taken to a hospital, but it's unclear why.

This is the exact reason why most states ban the use/ownership of fireworks. Darwin Nominees are always taking our fun away.

3 foot long mortar tube. That is not your every day mortar and I doubt it is a legal over the counter firework. Two big explosions that swt off all the car alarms on the street. Crazy stuff. I am guessing it was homemade fireworks.

I'm wondering why the OP put a "thumbs up" on the title of this thread?

I lit way over 200 mortars last night and I dont think any of them had the power to take off an arm. I wonder if he was making his own or bought some of the giant kind for like cities shows.
