Default Single cab 5.3 L with 243 heads?

i got a buddy with a truck that hes bolting out.
he just put on a UD pulley
and im helping him with the headers
and i just noticed his casting number is 243....
whats up with that? can some one explain?
he said he got the truck like that
and i think he said the truck is running 14's/high 13's at the track...
and he has the nice old truck intake manifold....
im a little confused =/

So what you are saying is you can get the stock 243s off the tuck and use them on the car. So if I were to find it at a junk yard I can use them. Which makes and models

yes you can. but the 243 is a much harder to find since they didnt normally use them on the trucks. 799 and 243 are the same casting, except the 243's have the lighter sodium filled valves.

not all 243's have the lighter sodium filled valves, the real difference is that the 799 heads have "LS1" low lift valve springs and the 243's have "LS6" high lift springs.

Bringing back a thread from the dead huh?

Its pretty simple the newer trucks got the TBSS intake aka nnbs intake, its a 90mm opening for cathedral port heads. Looks identical to the L92 intake but has a different port.

2008 5.3 in my 86 TA had 243s, tanked them for the 317s so the 243s can go on the 89 6.0 car.

Yep I have a TBSS intake and 243s on my LQ4.
It came from the factory with the truck intake and 317s.

Also of note, there are 2 castings of the 243s, the triangle casting being the more desirable.

Which ones are which? Mine have smooth chambers from the factory.
