room for improvement?
on paper i beleive there is deffinetly room for improvement
ran at the track 4 times tonight.
94 trans am, ebay special intake (not CAI), no cat, 2 3/4 pipe to blowmaster. needs plugs i think too
mods IVE done to the car... 315 nitto 555r, rest were done by PO.
all the runs i launched from idle, last 2 runs with nicely heated nittos had ZERO wheel spin.
first run (first run ever with the car and ever using drag radials)
2.23 60'
14.445
97.55mph
2nd run (terrible burnout, had to get out of it fast)
2.466 60'
14.932
95.79mph
3rd run (nice long burnout )
2.108 60
14.483
95.63mph
4th run
2.108 60' (again)
14.452
95.48mph
how much do you think there is to be gained from a cut out and launching at say 1000-1200rpm? the last run i didnt have time to think about brake stalling it as the lights just went as soon as i staged. Need spark plugs to i think, and id like a diff air intake.
i figured this car would have 13's in it. maybe with a proper brake stall launch it could?

If you had ZERO wheelspin like you say on the last two runs, then i'd say you won't hit 13's with the car as it sits right now. Where are you racing at? What was the temperature? What was the humidity? It seems like your car is down on power, unless the weather played a role.

id say the temp was close to 80 humidty about 65%? i was sweating waiting to run so it was fairly hot. Spark plugs need to be changed, could be robbing some hp.
my air intake i have doesnt leave the engine bay, so it just sucks in hot air. just odd that it ran 97mph once then 95 the rest of the times, guess the 2.2 60 played a role?
I have a manual fan switch and im honestly not even sure if the car has a t-stat. it runs just under the 185* mark crusing down the highway, and will stay close to 185 with the fans on in traffic
i filled up with 7 gallons of gas befor going down, needle was between full and 3/4.
Guess ill order a cut out and intake and intake elbow. i plan to do 3.73 gears and 3000 stall down the road. then headers and some seals if i drop the motor. i want to go 12's all motor.
was wondering if a madz28 tune would help at all or not.
Anyways first time racing on drag radials of any kind. I did my research, did what people said would work and these nittos work great. longish smokey burnout gets em to stick great. everyone was complaining about traction, i guess all of their lost traction went into my tires LOL. when i say zero wheel spin i mean it. first gear, straight to the floor from a dead stop, and the rpms climbed like i was in 3rd gear. back end stayed planted, zero wiggles. i was truely impressed.
thanks for the info guys.

When my 120,000 mile '96 was bone stock with tuning and Nittos it went a best of 13.61 at 101 with 2.00 60's. The track here at Tulsa is at about 690' elevation and the DA was 2000'. Seldom gets better than that here. I did have the coolant down to about 120 deg before I ran. Warmer water = slower et. They like hot oil and cold water. It did have a B&B cat back.
Always ran quickest leaving from an idle.

seems like whatever they did to the 95.5-97 helped quite a bit.
hopefully new spark plugs, lingenfelter cai, intake elbow and cut out will help her out
pulled one a few days ago to check it out. Was meaning to change them befor i got to the track but my tires came early. YUCK!!

well to me it just looks very old. I had a picture of the tip of it but cant find it. The gap seemed to be a little larger then .050. I just pulled one of 8 though just to check it out. they are the ac delco 906 (i think)
In your experience, what are some of the things that usually affect horsepower on LT1's?
I have done fuel filter, pcv, cleaned the air filter, fixed 3 vaccum leaks that i found.
I was thinking it might be the fact i have the 17x11.5 zr1 wheels all the way around. id like to find something lighter for the front. I also think the plugs are old and not gapped correctly anymore.

Tril dont waste $ on a elbow you wont see any track gains and your wallet will be lighter.
Do...
-Long Tubes W/cutout if your not doing a full exhaust
-Air intake if you wish
-Mail order tune
-Tune up, oil change, spark plugs and wires, seafoam.
-Possibly street radial tires (if you need a new set of tires why not)
Those are the basics any car should have before you start asking about how to improve.
Things NOT to buy at all or for the time being.
-Shorty headers (waste in the long run)
-LT4 Knock Module (unless you get for cheap but tuning can desensitize stock KM)
-Air Foil (unless you can find for cheap)
-Any new optispark part (unless yours poos the bed)
-52/58MM TB (52 is a total waste, 58 can be bought when you got a good head/cam package)
-Edlebrock LT1 manifold (overpriced hunk of powerless metal)

heres why i just ordered the elbow...i just learned that the bottom of it was folded up into the throttle body, im sure thats not good for air flow!
weather they help or not i needed one regardless. went with an ebay special for 52$. it should work just fine.
here is why i want to order a lingenfelter air intake...
and here are my tires, ignore the rear diff leak lol, its getting fixed when i do gears. nitto nt555r 315/35/17, they are the only mod IVE done, the tool who owned it first can be blamed for the other crapola. installed them yesterday morning, and thats how they look after 4 passes lol. wasnt lieing when i said i was doing good burnouts and getting them very sticky!
Ordered the air intake elbow, and a summit racing 3" manual cutout, cutout should be here monday, intake elbow should be here end of week.

i would try 275/40/17 tires smaller tires should help it mean while my friend put drag tires and ran two tenth slower cause he dont have gears or a stall on 323 gears the 315 was to much drag
#18
both are in the plans.... tci 3000 stall and 3.73 gears.
the main reason i did this post was cuz i felt the car ran slow. and according to a few people it ran slow or "seemed down on power". I beleive the intake elbow blocking air travel to the throttle body probably had a very big negative effect on how it was breathing.

2mph is quite a diff, dunno how i ran that 97 the first run. probably since i didnt have to sit around and did a 2.2 60.
well ive opted to regap the plugs instead of get new ones. they were at 055 plus or minus. Ive heard that the ac delco's like to open up over time so i gapped them at 047. see what happens. i have one plug left, passenger side front plug. Amazingly ive done all the other 7 plugs, and heres the killer...the alt and starter never came off! i'm also not bleeding at all!
