you don't have to take the heads off to change push rods just pull valve covers and losen rockers then pull push rods and put new in then torque rockers down to factory specs

hmm well it it has 140k and was run with almost no oil you might just want to put another longblock in there that is in good shape. But if you want to take the chance you might put it all back together and it will only last another few hundred miles before it spins a bearing or it might last a long time. who knows.

Best thing to do is pull it apart and just inspect what is going on. Its all speculation until you actually check. You have to pull the motor anyway if you were going to have to get a new long/shortblock assembly. Plus, the block itself is probably fine. Punch it out a tad and step up to a 382 if its a cheaper route while your at it.

Yeah my Dad suggested we pull it, the engine never ran hot it just started knocking really loud so we pulled over. We checked the oil and the dip stick was bare. I couldnt believe it ive been having this car for eight years, and never had any issues with the engine. I guess its just burning more oil with all the miles it has.

i would look at the contact points of the overhead components upon dis-assembly. If they look worn down or rough (not polished), chances are good you should probably pull the whole engine apart.

Im by far no expert but i would pull the motor, have it cleaned up to see where the bores are at, call SPEEDTWEEKERZ and get you a forged 383. just my $.02, BTW im sorry to ear of you loss its always a sad day in the automotive world when an LS1 dies
