Default So my builder recommends a high volume pump

We were going over a few last minute details and he recommends a high volume oil pump so I loaded up my Summitracing cart again.

Am I missing anything? Will the new stock oil pan gasket work with the Canton? I really don't want to spend $300 on the Canton but if I have to then so be it.
http://www.summitracing.com/parts/CTR-15-242T/?rtype=10

I'm assuming I can I use the stock pickup with the Melling?

Also, with the bullet racing cam should I splurge for the composite gear or just stick with the stocker that I pulled out and put aside?

What are you building that needs a HV oil pump?

There are a bunch of HV oil pump skeptics on here. They will certainly chime in.

There definitley is, I ran a Melling HV pump for 5 years without the first issue. My buddy was running the same one and he had all the teeth get sheared off the oil pump drive. Started doing some reading and the culprit was supposedly the oil pump. So, now he runs a basic Melling Select series direct replacement. When I did my new build I used the same pump.

I guess I am one of those skeptics.

It's not that I think high-volume pumps are bad, I just feel they are very unecessary if the motor is built and machined properly. A stock sbc/LT1 oiling system is very effective in stock form.

Did you ask why? No reason to run one unless your bearing clearances are loose. Probably a good idea to investigate this before the engine is together.

if your builder is machineing the bearing clearances wider than a HV pump would apply to that build. NOT on a stock motor

as noted under part description:

", providing additional flow to performance engines with wider bearing clearances. "

Or to a motor halfass slapped together without good machining. Sometimes in race applications for very high HP a HV pump might be speced for wide clearances. IMO a LOT of the time though it is done so cheap parts can be used without proper inspection and correction of taper or just sloppy dimensional tolerance.

A HV pump and 20w-50 oil do not need the same small dimensional tolerance as a a standard volume pump and 5w-30.

Yea worrying about an air foil is certainly more important than your oiling system....

5-10hp won't matter when your motor is scuttled......

I would say do it since you'll be inside the gas tank. Also make sure you use NEW oil. Used oil has more dirt in it. In this situation used oil is a no-no.

Now wait a min! Used oil is just as good, as long as you screen it out first. A spoon full of sand will help seat in the rings too..

You should. Unless you specifically requested loose tolerances it's retarded to think a high volume pump is necessary.

the high volume pumps tend to stress the composite oil pump drive assembly causing the gear to fail.. also using a high-volume/high-pressure pump with a stock pan isnt a good idea either..

one of the smarter things i seen done was the use of a high capacity vortec truck pan and a stock gm pump or melling select with a high pressure spring..

if you wanted to, you could use an single plane intake with a distributor hole and a dummy distributor to replace the composite oilpump drive.. you would need an elbow and fuel rails also.. or have your stock intake machined for a distributor hole.

Got a part number on that melling select Brucer? I've got time. Engine gets delivered this week.

In all seriousness engine is going to be spun to 6700. This was the reasoning behind the HV pump.

well im going to run th hv pump my clearances are not tight but also im running canton pan and im using a single plane with a distibuter delete shaft gets rid of that cheap plastic on from factory and i have a turbo setup that needs oil as well so that is why i went with it if your using stock pump drive do not!! use a hv pump it will destroy the plastic on it

Quick Reply: So my builder recommends a high volume pump
