Default New Power Steering Pump...Is it a Dud?

My old power steering pump was making a grinding noise so I replaced it with a new one well actually remanufactured from NAPA, and I just replaced it and it still make the same noise, although I have NO power steering until 3k. It also is making the same noise. Is it the pump or something else?

Thats what I thought too, no leaks underneath though. The pump seems like it had air in it but it would bleed out by now. I have driven it about 50 miles since then.

pump, if you have to spint it at 3k to get power steering thats the most likely option. especially if it didnt do that before.

I'd say the pump is bad. I bought mine from GM Parts Direct for 95.00 a couple of years ago. May want to try them.

I can hear that the p/s pump is making the noise, it makes it at idle all the way up. Like I said the power steering worked great before just had the dry bearing grinding noise coming from the pump. We put the new pump on and it is the same except no p/s till 3k. I checked the fluid as I bought the car about a week ago and it was a redish-brown color. All the P/s fluid I have ever seen was clear? Is it just because it was hot? Could the fluid be the root cause of the problem?

Lift the nose of the car off the ground and support it on jack stands. Run the engine, turn the steering wheel lock to lock several times, that should get the air out if there is any.

Well....We put another pump on, I have my power steering back but still have the dry bearing noise. I looked on Mitchell On Demand and it says that for some reason with the magnasteer under certain cases the air can get trapped in the system and the dealer HAS to put on a vacuum pump to get the air out. Supposably that will fix it. Anyone heard of that?

This was 5 Years ago man, and fwiw when you do a rack or pump if you use the recommended vacuum procedure to bleed it'll work fine
