Maybe a tenth , tenth and a half .. not worth it . I went from 273 to 373 and had a tune .Dropped @ 3 tenths . I assuming your a 6 speed ? than 410 would be a better choice .If your an auto and dont have a stall converter ,than look into getting 1 . My stall dropped over 6 tenths .Would of been more if it was as cool as it was w.o. the new stall .

Its a built 4l60e from FLT and I have a 3600 Yank converter ..I'm not looking to go 4.10s bc I drive from mid GA to north FL every other weekend and traction is still an issue even with the caltracs and sticky tires

if you havnt bought the gears i wouldnt waste the time going 3.42 to 3.73.... if you had 2.73's yes but 3.42 to 3.73 is not worth the gear oil. Someone at my local 1/8th track had a 98 t/a with 2.73's and installed some 3.73's. Went from running 9.0's to 8.6's-8.7's.

i agree it was definitely worth it... but OP has 3.42 gears already. The car i was talking about went from 2.73's to 3.73's Big difference between having 3.42's or 2.73's and going to 3.73's.
3.42 to 3.73 wouldnt be worth too much i dont think.

I assume this is a 6 spd. I've seen people pick up quite a bit. 2-3 tenths and 1-2 mph with bolt on cars. One guy I know gained alot going from 3.42s to 3.73s then went from 3.73 to 4.10s and picked up nothing.

im currently running 12.33@109.74 and the N/A 5.3 truck record is 12.08...im now debating on picking up a set of 799 heads for $350 shipped or get the gears and spend around the same after all is said and done..what ya think? heads?

Why so tall? Its a 6 speed, go 4.10 at least. Theres 2 overdrive gears so cruising isn't bad at all. If I had a 6 speed car I wouldn't put in anything less (numerically) than a 4.30 gear.

What is that record? N/A 5.3 for any truck or just (swapped like yours) or just for production trucks?
Anyway I didn't gain much switching from 2.73 to 3.73, other than it was more fun to drive on the street, so I would not hassle with going from 3.42 to 3.73.
Is there any other bolt-ons or weight reduction left to do before you switch heads? Do you know what kind of power you are putting down? I would think there is more room left to lower your 60 ft. with your mods and that stall, but then again not sure how your suspension is setup.

You will be vehicles upset with the slim to no gain you get with that swap and how much it will effect your highway mpg. Do not waste money on that.
Look into heads if you are looking to drop .3.. or look at getting your converter restalled to a 4000. Either one of those will let you drop a couple tenths and not sacrifice anymore driveability.
Just saw your sixty foot.. if you are hooking, that should be way! Lower.. A ptc4000 would get you in the 1.5 range.. which should get you in the 11s. If not throw a skinny ire on the front.. If you are at 12.3 now, those two things will get you there.
I would concentrate on your sixty foot, not top end/power mods.. suspension converter etc....1 in the sixty is .2 off et, .2 in sixty is .4 off et.

this is the truck that claimed to hold the N/A 5.3 record:
http://www.performancetrucks.net/for...d.php?t=476382
i think i may go 4.10s now after calling a speaking with someone at calvertracing...he said since i wasnt spinning at all that i really just needed to throw more gear and power to it to get the 60ft down(i thought i could do it with just a better suspension?)
and i would like to stall it higher but its a daily driver and the 3600 is already turning the hell out of some rpms..so i might just look into mild heads and or a FAST intake

Lmao.. you are considering 410s but don't want to move to a 4000 cause of driveability.410s are going to absolutely slaughter your mpg at anything over 60. Ask me how i know, i did it for two years.
Not to mention you might go from a 1.75 to 1.70 short time, autos dont respond to gears like manuals do.
I can almost promise you will regret going to 410s. If you have to gear down for piece of mind, go 373@.. I am cutting 1.4s with 380rwhp 3450# rw ptc 4000.. there are guys cutting 1.4s with 323s.
The different between a 3600 and a 4000 converter under normal pickup is around 75 rpms, once you hit lockup it is like stock of course with either.
If it were me... switch to a ptc 4000.. if you have to keep your converter, restall to 4000.. then start with suspension. I would look into skinnies as well, that's a proven tenth.
