Default ~~ Heavy oil consumption and light smoke ~~

I lose about 1 quart every 3 weeks. About 1000 miles, probably more (I travel a long way to work). I also have noticed once in awhile I see white smoke from the tail pipes on a cold start, and once or twice from WOT (and a huge plume of black smoke when I first got it and went WOT; it was driven by an older lady so Im thinking carbon buildup). Ive also seen (once or twice) a faint bit of white smoke from the oil filler. No oil on the ground... No oil in water and no water in oil...

Valve seals? Rings? HG? Something else like my cheap eBay PCV catch can setup (it started doing this after I installed it)? It runs great at all times and pulls really hard.

A quart of oil per 1,000 ain't that bad. Oil is cheap. Carry on.

Put 10w30 in it if you arent already and see if that keeps the burning down. Other than that just keep driving it

What should have I been running I the first place? I ran royal purple but of course it's a bit of a mix now that I keep adding. I believe it was 10w-40.

The standard fill is 5W-30. You might want to look at one of those high-mileage oils. The good news is that whatever oil you run it will always have fresh additive package with a one quart transfusion coming fairly often.

Do you guys think I shoud try deleting the PCV system and go with a breather to see if that helps? Or am I at end of life of the rings, or something else? Ive been paying extreme attention to the tails on startup and hard pulls and I havent seen any smoke at all. Just a note...

here is something easy for you to try. Start the car. Remove the oil filler cap. put your hand over it. Do you feel a vacuum? Or do you feel the pulsations hitting your hand? If you feel a slight vacuum, rings are fine. If you feel a pulsation of air on your hand, then rings have seen better days.

GM considers 1qt in 1500 miles normal oil consumption. At 214k I'd say you're not doing too bad only using 1qt.

I have the same problem with mine since I put my cam in. I just keep filling it with oil. I do get on it alot, maybe that has something to do with it.

This is a long shot - but it happened to me!

My TA suddenly dropped gas milage and oil consumption went way up, both within the same month.

As it turned out, my modified rocker arms by Harlan Sharp, were failing. The bearings became hard to pivot and resistant to rotate.

HS promptly replaced the defective parts with thier updated design.

Both problems solved!

do what was suggested in post#10,switch to a high mileage oil.you could replace valve seals your self.go to ls1howto.com for instructions and pics.I would remove the valve cover to inspect and maybe replace some valve train pieces.keep the pcv in place and inspect it for worn pieces.

Thanks for all the input guys. Well I put my hand over the oil filler neck and I couldnt tell anything. So I used a napkin and draped it over the hole and it concaved in. I checked this a few times and it was the same, cold or hot. The vacuum wasnt much though, just enough to concave the napkin... So am I good or is it not enough vacuum?

Whats the difference between High mileage and others? I thought I was doing good by using the Royal Purple.

Ive been looking at the LS1howto article. Doesnt seem too hard. Just that during inspection, I would have no idea if they are bad or good...

The high mileage oils contain additives to condiiton seals, more detergency to clear carbon deposits, and have higher Noack volatility ratings to make them more resistant to burn off. I don't think such oils work miracles but they may help.

if it sucked the napkin down ever so slightly, your rings are fine! thats a good thing for you! Have you noticed it smoking at all when your on it at WOT? I would say, the next thing, if it isnt an obvious leak, would be valve seals.

I cant find any leaks (other than an oil drop on the block here and there) and I went WOT twice on I95 today with no smoke that I could see.

Im glad to hear that my rings are good Wooho! And yes it was just slightly, I was worried it had to be more vacuum.

Should I go with a different set of heads? Isnt there a truck head that I could get to gain some HP (I know thats for another thread, just asking while we are on the subject)? Or do you think its just the seals and Ill be fine changeing them out?

BTW: I cant believe I forgot to mention this. When I do an actual oil change the oil gets damned near black in just a couple of days. Wouldnt this be a sign of bad PCV system (or rings)?

my oil was always BLACK. no matter, some people claim that there oil looks like new nearly 5k miles later, mine, never did. How do you have the PCV routed? to the catch can, but how? where do the lines come from?
