Default I pulled the heads today, pictures inside please take a look

I am in the process of H/C swap and the car has 50,000 miles, I think it has been running rich for a while now. What do you think of these pistons, It looks like a lot of buildup to me, and one looks rusty???

opinions please........

Looks normal to me......except for the rust. Most if not all engines will have carbon build up like that on the piston tops.

Looks ok but pistons don't rust, were you using any coolant? Were you using any fuel additive?

Looks like you don't use a PCV catch can.

Carbon looks normal. The "rust" spot looks like something spilled, maybe when you pulled the heads? Or is it a spot of missing carbon?

Ok I feel a lot better, thanks for all your replies. And that rusty looking spot is a place where there is no carbon buildup,,,, I still dont know why its rusty looking, I never use fuel additive.

Oh well, the project goes on. Today I got the solid motor mounts in and the new cam went in. Tomorrow heads go back on and bolt everything up

Your head gasket "may" have started leaking. One thing that coolant will do when it enters the combustion chamber in small quantities is clean all the carbon.

I really didn't want to say this but if it was mine i'd be looking for cracks in the head or cylinder liner. That piston had coolant on it.

That is the only piston with the "rust", the others are all about the same with some carbon buildup on them.

All of the plugs look good, they only have about 6-8K miles on them.

This is a pic of the head from the "rusty piston"

and the spark plug up close

Look like it's just stained. I wouldn't worry about it. Just clean up the tops.

WD-40 and Scotch Brite Green or Red pads works wonder on combustion chambers, deck surface, block surface and tops of pistons. Whend done, hit with Real Brake Cleaner and wipe down with a low fiber yield towel and unless the heads have been warped, you should not need anything more.

The Piston color looks like a stain, but again that will be done once you clean them up. Also get a catch can when you have a chance, it should reduce any future build up.

The edge of your intake seat look a bit rough in the second pic between the intake and exhaust seat have it checked out while it is off the engine already.
