Default 98 ws6 clone ls6 or 2002 ws6 90k stock

hey everyone, i am new to the ls1 drivetrain. but by no means new to trans ams! here is my problem. i am looking at 2 cars right now.

1. 98 trans am ws6 clone with a ls6 swap, 6 speed with around 150k on the body under 80k on motor unsure about the rest of drivetrain. interior needs some work. dont know anything about the guy, car has been for sale for a while.

2. 2002 ws6 90k, auto, bone stock, untouched, only an aftermarket cd player(stck cd player coming with it).

both around $8000
im really not looking for a project, more like something i can drive and modify as i go. ultimately i want an ls6, but auto/stick doesnt really make a difference to me.

I guess i am looking for advice.

Thank you in advance,
Bruce

Without a lot more info, I would go with the true WS6. The '98 sounds ready for the graveyard and I can't believe the seller is asking $8,000 if it needs work on top of everything else. The '02 is at least reasonable, and if not abused and was well-maintained, would be a nice DD car that you can slowly mod if you want to. Do your homework, Carfax, etc...

Nice to know. When you mentioned you wanted to modify your ride to an LS6 at some point I figured that was money down the drain if you ever did it. Good to hear you kept it stock and got another 50K trouble free miles out of it. The car is still probably worth $5K to $6K so you got some fairly inexpensive, fun miles in there. Had you gone the manual trans route with the other car your 50K miles would have probably been a lot more costly.

That's really cool! Thank you for the update so many years later. Yeah I'm still here.
I always wonder how buyers/sellers do over the years. I started posting here just about when this section started. Lord knows how much I influenced others but always tried to help based on 20+ years now of F-body ownership.

I think there are the majority of those that buy them and then get out a year or two later.

The minority grew up with them and have accepted that it isn't the perfect car, but the other offerings are not even close so it is as close to perfect as it gets.

^^ I agree with you and I'm definitely in that minority. It's not a perfect car by any stretch, but it's my favorite car ever. I've sold countless cars over the past 20+ years of F-body ownership, including a Porsche and a BMW. Yet the Trans Am remains in my garage, and my '96 C-4 reminds me of my '96 Formula which I had for 9 years. The C4 is better than the Formula but the LT1 and even the hatchback reminds me of that ride before I bought the 'vert. Now I have both.
