Stock Stall?

Stock Stall?
I've got a car that I'm working on that has an LS1/4L80e in it, and the owner wants a cam installed. I know a little about stalls, but since most cars I work on and drive are M6 cars, this is a learning experience for me. My Question is this, what is the biggest cam I can get away with WITHOUT putting in a bigger stall? I know that most cams need a bigger stall, and I have no problem with it, I just need to know what to tell the owner. Thanks for your help.

Anytime you put a cam in you should put a stall. Thats what I would tell him. Also tell him a stall gets you as good of gains as a cam and in my opinion should be done before you put a cam in. Anything over a 218 is gonna pull on the breaks and be a pita. I tried putting a hotcam in on my other camaro without a stall and it sucked. Really he won't get much gains at all with the little cam he is going to have to go with. tell him to either put a stall in or get a bigger cam and plan on putting in a stall later atleast

Believe me, I learned this lesson the hard way. Cammed the car w/ the stock stall. Performance was ok, but I was very limited on cam size, and ended up with something around 218/226 on a 115lsa. I still made 50rwhp after tuning, but it just wasn't ideal without a larger converter.
Moral of the story: Three months later I swapped to a bigger cam/heads/intake and added a 3600 stall.
Do it right the first time.

I drove my car for a long time on stock stall with my mods in sig...and hated it.
It was annoying as hell to drive and I went through a set of brake pads in about 3 months. Not only that the car was a dog below 3000rpms anyway so it was embarrassing pulling up to stage or race someone loping then it looking like I launched in 2nd gear.
My car is faster out of the hole boiling the tires than it was dead hooking with stock stall.
Cam + stock stall = waste of time/money.

I have seen get away with a mid 220s with the stocker, but its going to want to push through the brakes. I likely wouldnt venture into the 230s at all.

Makes perfect sense. I'm a manual guy personally so I don't do much auto driving. I've explained to her that she'll need a stall as well. This is going into an Iroc with the LS1/4L60. She's not too much into racing so a HUGE cam is pretty much overkill for her. Thanks for your help I've been looking at a few Thunder Racing cams that look good, and she'll most likely get a stall shortly as well.

If she doesnt want the stall for all out performance then maybe look into a 2800-3200. That will give the car some "get-outta-the-hole" but remain very drivable for a stock-like experience at part-throttle. A 2800 is perfectly acceptable for a smaller camm'd car.

Get a ptc 3000 and a cooler and call it a day. She wont hardly even be able to tell a converter is in the car until she smashes the go pedal. You can get a brand new ptc with a cooler for 550 shipped.
Btw.. had a car with just an ls6 cam in it.. you could tell a difference at idle holding the breaks from a stock cam.

Thanks for the help. I'm going to talk to her again tomorrow and see what she wants to do and go from there. I'd love to see what this car could do with a stall since I have an Iroc I'm going to do an LS swap into soon, although I'm not going with an auto.

I just got it in a couple days ago. I am wanting atleast a 1.7 60ft. I will be on 275 nitto dr's. After reading the post below of that gto with the circle d running a 1.61 60ft with full weight and stock suspension on 275 nitto dr's I am hoping 1.7 will be easy.

1.70s on Nittos with stock suspension and a full weight isnt "easy" by any means. It requires almost new Nittos (soft rubber), excellent track prep, and you must be very good at launching your car IMO. I could blow Nittos away with a 3200 converter on a greasy track, I mean spin outta the hole and its still spinning at 50+mph in 2nd gear. I have also dead hooked the same set of tires with nothing changed on the car. Different day, different track, different launch.
