Default My custom vertical radiator project.

well, i received my radiator from summit racing the other day, and proceeded to doing lots of measuring, and even more cutting. I still haven't figured out a way to mount the radiator yet, but for now it's sitting in its soon to be mounted position. For anyone wondering about the radiator i'm using it's this one here.

now, to the pictures.

I got the radiator to fit completely under the stock radiator support in vertical position. once all the holes in the bay are filled, and smoothed, it should look pretty killer with the black anodized AN fitting radiator hoses i'll be installing.

Why a vertical radiator? More room in front of the engine? How are you going to feed air to it?

I would assume the radiator is shorter than the stock one. Is it thicker and/or wider to make up for the lost surface area?

More room in front of the radiator, and it looks a million times better/cleaner in the bay. there will obviously be a fan on it too.

Yes, the radiator is shorter than the stock radiator, but more than double it's thickness with it being a 3" core radiator, and fully aluminum too rather than having plastic tanks. i'm not sure if it's wider than the stock one though.

I'm sure you'll be alright on airflow

Are you doing away with the expansion tank ?

The reason I ask is because I would like to do away with my expansion tank

yeah, the airdam will still be intact for inflow while moving, and i'll prolly mount a single puller fan for idle/stop and go traffic.

No, i'm not doing away with the overflow tank. although it will be mounted in front of the blinker assembly and behind the wheel well on the frame rail, so it'll be completely hidden anyways.

At the moment, i don't intend to go FI. Right now i'm building a 6.0 lq4/9 into a 370 for this car, and that's what will be going in it. I'm more of an NA guy, but i suppose if i ever do FI, i'll have the room, but at the moment i don't plan to.

The main reason i did this is because of it's substantially cleaner and simpler look. It gives the bay a stealthy look, and makes getting to anything on the front of the car 100x easier. I hate how the radiator covers the entire front of the engine. I plan on having billet/powdercoated accessories, and i don't want them not visible because of a radiator in the way. This radiator setup should cool better than factory too. A thicker core, and slightly shorter radiator, but full aluminum, and rather than a small high speed fan and a small low speed fan pulling air pretty much facing downward it'll have a single large fan pulling right off the engine.

haha, exactly man. makes things alot nicer. This is the radiator the FI guys have been using when cutting the core support out, i just opted to cutting the under side of the core support instead of cutting it completely out. it still consisted of cutting the hell out of the core support, all the cutting was done underneath it though. the only thing left of the core support is what you see in the pictures.

Looks REALLY clean, I'd be very interested in doing this just for the appearance factor if you don't run into any significant cooling issues. Great job! Also definitely interested in seeing the pics sans radiator.

I shouldn't run into any cooling issues, several FI guys are using this exact radiator on this forum, as it's the same one that people are using when doing vertical mounts when cutting the support completely out.

The bottom radiator support is not cut at all.
