Built 96 with 200k miles? should I buy it?
I'm in need of a little help here.
I have a chance to buy a 1996 Camaro Z28/SS. The vehicle has 200,000 miles on it. The motor was completly rebuilt at 117,000. It was bored and stroked to 6.3L and rebuilt with all forged internals, an ATI Procharger with twin intercoolers was installed runing @ 10psi.
The transmission and rearend was rebuilt at the same time to handle the extra power. The wheel bearings have only a few thousand miles on them. All the bushings have been replaced.
It is a 2 bolt main. The only thing left stock he said was the block. I was told it had LT4 heads with a ton of work done to them. LT headers and a bunch of other stuff done to it.
The only bad he says is it burns about 1 quart of oil every 1000 miles. Puffs some smoke when you start it. If it sits any longer than 15 mins it will puff smoke when you start it up.
I have a friend who lives in the area taking it to a shop to get a compression test done as well as look over it for anything else that might be wrong.
It is a very nice looking car and is in great cond in and out.
How many miles do prochargers last? Should it be rebuilt soon? This will be my DD, but i do have a backup vehicle.
How How much do you think it would be worth? I'm new to most things speed related.
Thanks for any and all help guys!

how much is it going for ? Pay for the condition not the mileage. Don't pass on it just because of the mileage, i don't know how you put 200K on a z28 that doesn't come with a lot of highway mileage. I'd be really surprised if that was in stop/go traffic every day like chicago.

We are not dead set on any price right now. Its floating around $8k right now I think.
They are mostly highway miles. California to AZ.
I understand the pay for the condition not the millage. But when its at 200k I'm just a little warry.

85K miles on a procharged motor, highway miles or not, is a lot to me. You could probably assume it's been beat on more often than not. No one in their right mind would deck out a motor just to baby it all day long.
Be prepared to work on it in case it blows and start the offering at about $5,500 - especially since it might need some new piston rings, valve stem seals, or both. Keep in mind that the trans and rear have some procharged mileage on them as well.

Hmm. . . I have a friend who lives close taking it to a mechanic to get a compression test done. I remember him saying that his mechanic said it needed a new valve seal.
I have access to a shop that could help me re-ring the motor. Would I have to take to block and get it honed? I guess that would depend on the condition the cylinder walls are in. worst case I would have to buy new pistons as well. . .
I could rebuild the Procharger myself for around $350 so that’s not too bad.

Yes it’s listed in Phoenix. I guess I should have posted the link but he doesn’t say much in the post so I didn’t bother.
Anyways here it is http://phoenix.craigslist.org/nph/cto/2194009927.html
I think I’m going to back down from this one. I don’t want to buy an $8k or even a $7k vehicle if it is going to need to be rebuilt soon. I’m still going to do a compression test and remain hopeful, but like you guys have said 85k on a procharged motor is still allot.
People don’t build these cars to putt around in as earlier stated.
On a side note I found a 98 Z28 with 112k for $3800 grinds going into 3rd gear, and stereo was hacked up. If I can get him down to $3k I will probably buy it.

If it were me I'd tell him to yank the engine and sell the roller w/ the trans for a few thousand less and you build your own engine.
